India is a desperately poor country, but are all people leaving Hinduism doing it for money?
**Christian missionaries held in Chhattisgarh
**As many as 11 Christian missionaries have been arrested in Chhattisgarh for allegedly bribing poor Hindus to embrace Christianity, police said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday night in Jalampur area of Dhamtari town, 80 km south of capital Raipur. “The missionaries were caught bribing poor Hindus in a slum colony to convert to Christianity,” Bharat Singh, the police superintendent Dhamtari district, said. “They were promising people economic help and jobs in exchange for conversion.” Chhattisgarh’s Bharatiya Janata Party government passed anti-religious conversion legislation in the assembly in August that provides for a three-year jail term and fine of Rs 20,000 for those involved in religious conversion by force or allurement. The arrests, on the eve of Christmas, led to communal tension in Dhamtari town with the Bajrang Dal, Dharm Sena and Shiv Sena holding a demonstration on Monday against the alleged conversions.
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
i know what ur intentions are, but still let me answer. Not all people doing it for money. but due to casteism, they are embracing mainly christianity and buddhism.
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
I agree that they convert for money- I remember once reading about Gandhiji condemning Christian missionaries as they exploit people and convert them when they are desperate for money- that's why there's so much voice being raised against X-tian missionaries in India

Gujarat - genocide of Muslims by Hindu terrorists.
Kashmir - tens of thousands of Muslims killed by Indian army.
Punjab - thousands of Sikhs killed by Indian army.
Christian priests and nuns have also been killed or attacked in India.
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
Any conversion because of an incentive such as money, food, medical, politics, etc. is not lasting and not a true conversion. A true conversion is where a person know the risks involved, convert and face suppression or trial because of the conversion.
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
If they want to convert to christianity then I have no problem with it.
If "upper caste" hindus treated them with respect then these people would have a much more love toward hinduism.
The fact that they will easily convert to christianity means that their links to hinduism is weak.
Another thing you see is that you will Never see Brahmins working with these people...trying to teach them hinduism.
I actually admire the Christian missionaries for being so dedicated.
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
Silliy Billy,
People in India who embraced other religions are the ones who belonged to lower castes (a legacy of casteism). Poverty combined with lower caste is an ideal bait for the missionaries. It is not that Hindus are deprting from their faith.
You might check for yourself how many christians from the western world are embracing hinduism without any efforts for proselytisation. You might also figure out how many muslims are embracing other religions.
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
The lure of money or the lure of a life in heaven, what's the difference? They are both bribes. One offers benefits for the here and now, the other offers benefits for the hereafter.

Gujarat - genocide of Muslims by Hindu terrorists.
Kashmir - tens of thousands of Muslims killed by Indian army.
Punjab - thousands of Sikhs killed by Indian army. ( in 1984 there was a sikh extremism it almost 23 yrs now are you still counting that and more than half of indian army is sikh dominated )
Christian priests and nuns have also been killed or attacked in India
Re: Christian missionaries arrested in Indian state
Our maid servant here in India is Hindu. Her 9 year old daughter is Christian. A nine year old converted to Christianity. Why? Coz some Christian missionary came by their house and told them that if she converted, she wouldn't have to pay fees at her school anymore, she could get books, etc. for free.
The issue isn't religious conversion through dawah... it's religious conversion by force or by offering economic incentives - THAT is wrong legally and ethically. There is no compulsion in religion.
