Issue with Chicago is that not only is it insanely expensive (similar to cali) but has absurd weather.
Where else can you have a 105/110 F heat index in the summer and also have -30 F windchills in the winter?

We did not have -30 here! 
We did have the 110 heat index last week, that I admit. However, its not usual for us.
Okay I heart Chicago…I know the weather is moody and all but I wouldnt want to be anywhere else. Bas kehdiya. 
My parents tried to settle in Texas, Cali, NYC, etc but they fell in love with Chitown. Its got a little bit of everything with not too much of anything and thats what I love. The community is tight knit without being too overbearing and a decent sprinkling of people everywhere. Devon is an asset also.

what do you mean we didnt have -30F here? I know for a fact that windchills hit close to that range this past winter because I was there and not to forget the wintermagedon snow storm that shut down the city. But to be fair, as X2 pointed, this weather is similar to all Midwestern cities.
Apart from that though I do agree Chicago is a great city esp devon.

1.Chicago (that's where the in-laws are)
2. New York (If I get tired of the in-laws)
3. California (been living in So.Cal for almost all my life and sort of tired of it)
Wouldn't want to live anywhere else besides these 3 so other places aren't an option.

easier done when single, as career gets established, its harder to move about, marriage means move has to factor in 2 careers, and then with kids, house etc, you have less flexibility, so the move has to be more deliberate, and then the total package of pros and cons which vary person to person play out. some may have a good social circle they don’t want to part with and all that. in some cases particular industries are big in certain cities and moving to another place which you may like changes career prospects, to some that is okay to others it is not.
Although i have to say when we first moved to chicago, of our usual hangout crowd everyone has moved and to a diff region, and interestingly enough no one has gone to the place they said they wanted to move.
the couple that was all about bay area is in texas 
the couple that was interested in florida is in oregon
those who were interested in southern cali are in carolinas
those who wanted to move to virginia are in NJ, although they did move to virginia first but moved due to work
before I moved to chicago, i was in midwest temporarily and wanted to move back to the east coast, but one thing led to another and I am here

I don't think a lot of people care much for it. It's the wildfires that have been scaring us over the past couple of years.
The only earthquake I have encountered here was the April 2010 one. It was a 7.2 and quite scary. Forgot all about it though :P
I feel like you're risking the chance for a natural calamity no matter what part of the world you live in. There's no telling.

commitments don't allow for random moves...school,business etc...

LOL , during my consulting days recruiters used to ask me where would I like to work. I would tell them if the money is right I do not mind working in Alaska or Gobi desert. :D
But no I did not choose Alaska , but a place with milder weather and four seasons.
lived in alaska for ten years...did my high school and undergrad from there...loved it so much and miss it enough that would love to move back some day

I refuse to move to any southern city (Houston, TX being a notable exception). Filled with goray paindoos.

So a question for the posters who lived in Cali and now have moved.
Do you feel that overall qlty of living was better in Cali than where u r right now?
Sometime back, I was on an "extended" vacation in cali (SF, LA etc) and it seemed like "heaven" compared to the crappy place i live now in the midwest. But I realize that being on vacation and actually living someplace are totally different.
