BRUSSELS, Nov 5 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac said Friday that Europe should bolster its united power on the world stage, in the face of a strong United States reinforced by the re-election of President George W. Bush. “Europe today has more than ever the need to strengthen itself, to reinforce its unity and its dynamism,” Chirac told reporters on the second day of a European Union summit here. “It is obvious that the assertion of strong American policy leads [us] quite naturally to reinforce Europe on political and economic fronts,” he said.

Chirac, the main opponent of last year’s US-led war on Iraq, has long argued for a multipolar world rather than allowing a single world superpower to remain after the collapse of the Soviet Union. On the economic front, the two-day EU summit debated the so-called Lisbon agenda, a flagging plan by Europe to overtake the United States as the world’s “most dynamic” economy by 2010.

The French leader said that politically, the EU’s new constitution signed a week ago in Rome must enable Europe to bolster its unity “in the face of large powers in the world, existing or in the future”. Chirac also downplayed the significance of opinion polls showing negative public reaction to Bush’s re-election. “I don’t think that the French have cause for concern,” he said. The French president on Wednesday congratulated Bush on his re-election, saying he hoped the two would seize the chance to breathe new life into strained Franco-US relations.

Even "Old Europe" isn't foolish enough or desperate enough to rally behind France. Canada, maybe....

France is and will always be a major player in Europeon politics regardless of being referred as 'old Europe' by some US critics.

Absolutely and since they have made up their mind to support the entrance of Turks into the EU, the role of their support towards the US which is already too tolerant will have to change one day.

Good.

When you salute French government, make sure you salute French people as well.

Unlike Mullahtic fever of Pakistani toads of Arrabobs, French people have open arms for America and Americans. French leadership may have some qualms about American policies, but nobody in France is burning American centers, or beheading American visitors.

We in Pakistan are the stupidest followers of Mullahitc Arrabobs. Americans give us money and we are ready to burn their diplomats. Poor things can't even eat dinner in peace. Recent explosion in a posh hotel is the biggest shame for Pakistani people.

Off course killing diplomats will be written as golden traditions of Pakistani-Mullahtic-Halwa-tic history.

Damn followers of Arrabobs.

Europe does not have to do any thing to counter US power. America has dug it’s own grave by choosing Bush for 4 more years. With the Euro flourishing and a European defence force a real prospect, Europe is now a recognizable political entity on the world scene. A population of over 300 million and the world's largest economy have already turned the EU into a super-power, but it is now on the verge of being a super-state.

AS, because someone learns how to use a microwave doesn't make them a gourmet chef.

Not that I am trying to deny every thing you just stated in your post, but based on annual GDP, industrial growth, military basses around the world, sophistication of military equipments, natural resources potential and standard of post-graduate education, USA is way ahead of whole Europe together. At least 50 years ahead……EU has a lot to catch…and I am not saying it because of any personal bias…you can check the numbers on google easily…..

^ he doesn't want to be bothered with actual "facts". Besides everybody knows google is basically a mossad front.

Flourishing is not good.

In reality if you were to add all of Europes credentials together and pit them against the USA, it's Europe that is far ahead.

Peace.

Some of your statement is devoid of facts. FYI, Europe has some of the leading research institutes in the World, it has some of the leading Universities, it has some of the worlds leading Pharmaceutical companies, it has some of the most advanced engineering companies.. some of which are just as advanced as US companies if not better. You also forgot about key factors within the US economy such as the trade deficit of $54 Billion and the US National debt this current fiscal year at a record $236 Billion! and the 500,000 Americans whose IT jobs were shifted abroad *source: Goldman Sachs. I could go on and on.. Somehow I think the economic outlook for the US is not so rosy afterall.

you people are too heavily-invested in pipe dreams. any poor economic outlook for the U.S is all within the contest of being the sole superpower of the entire world. no american politicians are shaking in their boots over the grand threat of a bunch of followers with significantly less power (EU).

Also not forgetting the loss of more than 2 million U.S. manufacturing jobs since 2001. source: Reed Business Information.
Pipe Dreams indeed.. :D
