Chinese New Year

23rd January 2012, beginning of the new Chinese year, year of the dragon. Do you guys plan to do anything special? Any family activities or day out etc?

Re: Chinese New Year

why would we do anything special?

Most of us had our new year at the first of Muharram.

**Gung hei faat choi!

I have been practicing this with my Chinese staff. I’ve been told with my “accent” I could pass for a native Cantonese speaker

Re: Chinese New Year

It's a great opportunity to introduce kids to Chinese culture. There are usually loads of events happening in local museums around the time of new year. Oh well, you can always teach kids about China on 1st muharram too if you feel you'll be doing something haram.

Re: Chinese New Year

no offense, but why the chinese culture? why not our Islamic and even our Pakistani culture?

What is so special about the chinese culture?

Re: Chinese New Year

hehe :phati:…what does it mean?

Re: Chinese New Year

That’s Happy New Year in Cantonese!

Re: Chinese New Year

Did I say anything about not teaching Islamic or Pakistani culture? Why wouldn't you teach your kids about Chinese culture or Confucius anyway? And it's not like there aren't any Chinese Muslims in the world...

Re: Chinese New Year

Re: Chinese New Year

Btw, just yesterday I had to watch a teen American show on tv and I noticed that they are highly racist towards the Chinese people. I think US should adopt a similar policy as Britain's in order to make Americans more aware of other nations and cultures so they can treat them with respect.

Re: Chinese New Year

May be Faris bhai can help…he’s the only person here who knows Chinese languages.

Re: Chinese New Year

This saying brings back memories.. we learnt it in primary school for Chinese New Year (even tho the school was 99% white)..

I think it’s healthy for kids to learn + take an interest in other cultures, not just our own..
