LOL .... OP ... You misled everyone in to believing that you are celebrating Chinese New Year, and then clarified that you intend to use the opportunity of Chinese New Year to teach the kids about that culture ... As for Sr. Afshi ... I think too many assumptions are being made ... Both need to take it easy.
We can learn about other cultures to improve our abilities to understand other people.
sidi psyah - it was just a simple question. I just wanted to know why the OP thought the Chinese culture was so important. That was it. Maybe the OP married a chinese person, for example. I don't know. That is why I had asked.
I was taking it easy.
I agree - learning about other cultures is essential in Islam. I really dont like masjids that restrict themselves to one culture. Mashallah the masjid I attend is so multicultural - i love it.
every culture is equally important to me...it's just that i've never done anything special [education-wise] with kids on china or chinese culture so i was thinking may be other parents can give some good educational ideas....i though chinese new year was a good occasion for learning.
while its a good thing you are allowing your kids to learn about other cultures, personally I feel celebrating and participating in another holiday, other than a Islamic one, might confuse kids. Its like when I see hindus and sikhs celebrating christmas. There are other way of learning about different cultures than by celebrating their holidays. Museums, books, art, food, language, etc.

I don't know how people celebrate Chinese new year but I'm going to use the ideas and resources you mentioned for educational purposes....now if some people see it as a way of "celebration" then I don't know how to explain.....sorry if i didn't make it clear in my first post.
Just to add that if I had any intention of celebrating I’d post it in Household Affairs Forum. Celebrating a holiday and learning about a holiday while others celebrate it by watching them are two different things. I won’t be “celebrating” it like those hindu and sikh parents do every Xmas. So I’m quite confident my children won’t be confused.
there's gonna be a 3-day chinese festival in calgary and i plan to take kids there. don't care about their new yr or traditions just for fun we r gonna go.
