Ten years ago, the fierce skirmish over Kargil, the strategically important piece of territory disputed between India and Pakistan came to an end. The war, which started as the Pakistan Army came close to cutting off key routes in Kashmir**, quickly turned as India responded with unexpected force.** The crisis between the two nuclear-armed nations brought on the spectre of the possible use of such weapons or of still further acceleration in the fighting to open-up an all-out war between the two neighbouring countries. Some say the US played up the nuclear threat to force Pakistan to bow down; others say the threat was real.
An urgent meeting between then prime minister Nawaz Sharif and then US President Bill Clinton brought an end to hostilities. Despite accounts to the contrary by senior Pakistan officials at the time, and some effort by the US to offer a semblance of face-saving, Pakistan’s arm was essentially twisted rather firmly by Clinton and his team. Even now many facts remain disputed including the precise exchanges that took place as Clinton and Sharif met one-to-one in what was a meeting that brought about final decision to back down. The confusion that existed within Pakistan over who was calling the shots on Kargil added to the entire controversy. Nawaz Sharif subsequently claimed he was not properly informed as to what was going on by then army chief General Pervez Musharraf. This was denied by the military. Some trace the animosity of the two men to each other to the days of the Kargil war and the failure to forge a common front during it. Recently, Nawaz Sharif has displayed newspaper cuttings which indicate Musharraf indeed knew the PM was intending to meet Clinton. The then army chief had in the past denied prior knowledge of the meeting and there had been insinuations that Sharif had ‘sold out’ the nation by giving in to US demands.
The war of course intensified for many months the tensions between India and Pakistan. Even today, ten years on from 1999, the Indian military – caught unawares by the early actions in the war – is said to remain wary of a repetition of similar action. But the events of those dramatic weeks taught us many things. One is that in the situation today, the issues of the nuclear weapons will always come up and involve the international community. This perhaps is also a reminder of the need to avoid situations that plunge our countries into peril and to work instead towards a situation that can ensure there are no Kargils to confront in the future.

Yeah, considering we are peace loving country, we decided we should not allow this to escalte. Hence saving the army of appearing to be less then peaceful. Thankfully, our DEMOCRATICALLY elected govt fixed the problem.
Personally I would have preferred to trash peace with the Barbaric Indians and eep the territory. Fortunately for you our govt is far more accomodating:)
India must be thankful for Clinton otherwise they would have had to embarass themselves further, by losing ot being forced to have to draw another all out war with a much smalelr foe.
Like I said. Remember to bend right over and kiss the Clinton rear end otherwise India would have faced far mroe humiliation:)

There is a big difference between what you like and what is possible ...... Sharief as PM knew that .... you have the luxury of being on a "virtual" space, he did not.
NS knew what would happen if he did not go and do what he did :D ..... Otherwise, as had happened before, he would like his ex-general end up kissing a "brown" and "skinny" ass:D

No actually, the oppinion that counted most was that of the Army and the generals. Now they Knew that India was a nation of malnourished old women, and could hardly put up an actual fight.... So they had calculated that Kargil had the potential to be a great success.
Nawaz Sharif is a politician. He cant be expected to know as much as the military on matters military. God bless him he believes there is something in Indians thats worth making peace with. Ofcourse, he is misguided however well meaning. Indians are vipers and can never be trusted.
Bottom line is that had it not been for Clinton and the good will of Nawaz Sharif, your corpses of your idiot soliders would still be tumbling down the slopes of KARGIL:)
Pakistanis dont need to worry abot India-its better for them to take care of Baluchistan-or in a matter of time it will be seperated like bangladesh91971)-they need to sort out there internal problem and the habit of begging from foreign countries-should try to improve its image it is compared in the same league as that of afganistan-majority of pakistanis knows it very well who r in US & UK.Its a breeding ground of terriorist

Arent you missing something here. Why did not Mushy intervene and kick out NS. Kicking out demorcratically elected govt (dont know how democratically, but that is a different topic) is the norm in Pakistan or was Mush too on the Indian side.
Really thanks for informing us. After all we are hearing these lectures from a person whose former President bent over backwards to satisfy the US Secretary of State. Also your national hero was put under house arrest from pressure from somebody.
