You misunderstand. What it "seems" like to you is not what it actually is. Who in their right mind would think anyone would imply that people should be deprived of religious rights!

One point to note is that China “only” restricts & prosecutes fasting for the Uigher Muslim people of Xinjiang, who are ethnic Turks.

The Hui people, who are ethnic Chinese and form the majority of the Muslims of China, haven’t had such restrictions since the fall of communism. Hui Muslims (party members included) are free to observe the fast.

The Guardian article at this link China steps up campaign against Ramadan in Xinjiang | World news | guardian.co.uk states that

Ilham Tohti, a Beijing-based Uighur economist, said this year’s campaign against participation in Ramadan was being more strictly enforced, with officials in some areas requiring people to sign pledges that they will not take part in religious activities.

Tohti said the campaign appeared to be aimed solely at Uighurs in Xinjiang, noting that Kazakh and Hui Muslims in Xinjiang, as well as Uighurs outside the region, face no such restrictions.

I’m note saying that China’s policy is justified (it is certainly an act of evil). but the intent seems to be to targetteted at Uigher separatism - China’s government is trying to stop Uighers from acting different to other Chinese while living in the Uigher-majority area to break down the sense of being a different ethnic nation.

Then better try meeting someone in person who had has his fair share of "such" Problems .... he/she might be able to explain it in a better way :)
