Child Brides

Below what age would you consider this to be true? A generation ago, it was common for girls to be married at 17/18. Would you have labeled them as such? My little cousin who is 16 just attended the wedding of her recently turned 17 friend. What are people expecting girls to know at that age? And how do they expect them to adjust to the responsibilities of house and home?

Re: Child Brides

Girls age 16 and above are not considered "child brides" in any society as far as I know. In fact, it is still quite common among 17 and 18 years old to get married or at least engaged. The legal age of marriage is 16 (with parents' consent) in most countries so a 16 years old girl is definitely not a child bride.

Re: Child Brides

Ok then the question is, do you agree with this practice?

Re: Child Brides

Exactly, under 16 are not child brides. I thought this thread was for girls under 13...
Anyone getting married after the age of 16 is pretty normal and i think is mature enough to differentiate between right & wrong. Rest of the things like household responsibilities and kids you learn with time & experience.
I have frnds who got married at 17, 18 yrs and MashAllah taking care of their house n kids very well.. while there are some who get married at 25 plus & find hard time getting used to susraal, ghargharasti etc...

Re: Child Brides

Of course not. And I don't think anyone here would agree with it.

Re: Child Brides

Yes, if someone's daughter is 16,17,18 and the rishta they get is very good tou defo YES.. :)
And i tell you its all about Kismat.

Re: Child Brides

Am i getting something wrong here?

Re: Child Brides

What hareem said..

When I think of a child bride I tend to think of pre-teens..

Re: Child Brides

The practice of marrying off little girls (under 16) I mean.

Even 17 is too young IMO but to each their own.

Re: Child Brides

Preteens is like 12.. so fifteen fourteen is fine?

Re: Child Brides

Do you mean just engaged or actually married at that age? I'm not totally against it but do think it's important for a girl brought up in the west esp to have finished A-levels at the very least if possible.. That's just her basic education..

Re: Child Brides

No, it's not fine imo..

I just wouldn't term 14 or 15yr-olds as 'child brides.'

Re: Child Brides

oh ok.
I agree that some girls who have married really young do have good lives, but it is the luck of the draw. I feel that to increase the chances of a better life for girls, they should be emotionally more mature and just generally be allowed to finish some sort of degree which would allow them to stand on their own feet if need be at any point in the future (death of spouse, financial help required in house, divorce)

Re: Child Brides

If she hasn't stopped developing fully, I'd personally think of her as a "child bride."

Yes, engaged at 16,17 but married at 18 is totally fine.
Yes, a girl should have basic education atleast.but norm girls get married at 21,22.. Finished with their degrees.

Just curious, was the wedding in Pakistan or in western world.

Re: Child Brides

I know two girls who were married/engaged at least right out of HS....they had their challenges but nothing that a couple doesn't normally face...and they went to college and got their degrees while married/engaged..

Re: Child Brides

So do you want answer from Islamic angle or general practice in east and west?

Re: Child Brides

From personal views , not the islamic angle or general practice.

And the wedding was in pakistan. In some village it seemed
