Khawa have you seen this link…??..it shows how to just make cuts in the dough and then keep on turning each strip inwards at a downward angle and eventually it looks like a braid…it is pretty easy.
I think you can do it the way you are saying but it wont give it the braid look.

Khawa if you follow how it says here you should be pretty good. And you’ll get the braids. As chips said, you wont get it the way you are saying.
