is it haram??:aq:
Re: Cheddar cheese
Depends on if it contain rennet, which are enzymes derived from animals.
Try Tillamook cheeses, they are halal. I am told.
Re: Cheddar cheese
Here I look at the packet and the ingredients. If it has animal rennet in it, it is haram. A good indicator is if it states it is 'suitable for vegetarians'. I don't know if this is applicable for non-Uk countries.
Cheese on the whole can be quite tricky, just have a thorough read of the packaging and you should be fine.
Re: Cheddar cheese
Yes they're haram because most of e'm contain animal rennet. But it's best to avoid when in doubt
Re: Cheddar cheese
Is cheddar cheese really haram?:aq:..Iam really surprised to know this.
Re: Cheddar cheese
not if you buy the kosher ones... easily available in any mediterranean food store... big stores like Shoprite also carry em. I cant think of the names exactly off the top of my head but I think Hashar Haolam and Miller's are two popular kosher cheese brands.
Re: Cheddar cheese
I read about Rennet on wikipedia and it comes from cows so I dont understand why it is haram? Its apparently never made from pigs so it shouldnt be a worry?

Hi Mamaof3,
Many people here while using the term "halal" are actually referring to "zabiha halal" which not only depends on the animal in question, but also imposes several principles of slaughtering the animal - e.g. recitation of God's name and the full draining of blood (not jerk beef etc.).
I love my cheddar... I just look for products made from microbial enzymes/rennet rather than animal rennet/enzymes.
I found this valuable
