An inch? Or two? Thats impossible. No cam can do that - and have good focus!

au contraire mon ami.. it's very possible. The macro focus range for cameras tells exactly that.. there are several that focus down to a few inches.. albeit expensive.. although i think i've kinda found my answer.
I re-evaluted my needs and removed the requirement for an uncompressed format.. it would force me to buy larger more expensive cards and also time taken between shots would increase.
so now i'm left with low-light focusing abilities.. It appears ISO800 figures only in the more expensive models so i'd have to settle for a low noise ISO 400.
I also downgraded my budget to about $200 since i discovered my current 2.1MP camera wouldnt fetch me much on the used market.
So i'm leaning towards the Canon PowerShot A300
It's macro focus range is down to 5cm (2in), uses only two AA, has an orientation sensor (according to dpreview) and sells for US $200 street.
So what are the opinions of experts.. a good buy? what's the nearest competitor which offers comparable features plus more in the same price range.??
hahah sowwy.. i thought a smart shopper like you could put together a suggestion in minutes..
if it's any consolation the thread will be a guide for people looking for similar features and your suggestion was to the mark...
it's just that i have these sudden changes of heart (and thinning of wallet).
So any other contenders or the A300 stands alone? I guess i could forego with the zoom cuz my existing 2.1MP doesn't have it either and i don't miss it.
^ No problem. I exaggerated. It didnt take 1 hour. :p.
The A300 is a great cam, and it produces great results which is typical of Canon. I personally would'nt recommend it as it has no "real" zoom (digital zoom doesnt count as zoom). Once you experience zoom, there is no going back. If you can ignore this feature, I see no reason why not to get it.
Atleast give the D-550 a shot. Its a great cam, and the optical zoom might be worth the extra dollar or two.
I like the Powershot A Series. What do u guys say 'bout the Powershot A70? I believe it has almost all (or all) of the features that he wants… especially the price.
well i really don't use zoom .. a P&S should be wide..though todays P&S (barring Nikon) aren't wide enough. Digicams have stopped down zooms which are of no use to me if i want portraits cuz i can't simulate shallow DOF.... OTOH macro focus is an absolute must for me (e-bay product listing etc).
A70 is another good camera.. i had my eyes on it.. but my wallet doesn't agree.. it still sells for around $300. (both these canons still sell higher than the average camera after so many months of their release). and if i'm gonna spend upwards of $300 on a digicam i would want to see a bigger CCD size and some other features yet to be seen in $300 digicams.
RadioShack Canada has 3mp camera for $229
downside no optical zoom yet I probably will go for this one
I also know of a place where u get refyrbished stuff used only for a month or 2 in amazing conditions so there I found 5mp, 4 x oprical for $250 used 3 months
^ these cams usually post fake mps. ive seen a "9mp" cam selling at kiosk for $300. When I saw the quality it was ****. Worse than a real 3mp. Perhaps someone can explain.
hskhan first off this camera is from Radioshack secondly the company is a new one ad there fore they are selling for cheap to introduce themselves in the market

PA, with your list you have 2 choices:
1. Raise your limit a teeny bit and go for the Powershot S45 (lovely features, I've used the S40 and its awesome results).
2. Really go for the best out there, the Powershot G3. I should be getting this one this month. I currenly have the Digital Elph (s series). from 4 yrs ago, and its really given me good service (its sitting on my desk in front of me right now).
I somehow don't like the A series, they are little bulky and don't feel very comfortable (so no one hand jobs, no pun intended). Their shutter speeds don't really go down that far (I think the A80 only goes to ISO 400). Pictures quality is really diminished after 1/500 SS.

Budget was an issue.. I wanted to get everything (camera + 128MB memory) done under $200 delivered and i wanted brand new with US warranty.

I can't justify spending $500 on a digi P&S. .. I'm already holding my breath (and stuffing my piggy bank) for the more affordable full frame SLR's .. probably in a year or two they'd be within mortals reach.

I agree.. the A series is bulky.. but feature for feature i don't think there is anything that touches the A70.. berry berry nice.. but sadly i didn't wanna cross the $200 limit.
I ended up buying the Canon PowerShot A300 + 128MB memory. It's got most of the 'must-have' features on my list.. i'm delighted with the results so far.
i have an a200, and its an awesome cam. very robust, have dropped it on concrete a few times, fallen down from a mtn bike at 40 mph with it in my fannypack, the mofo still takes breathtaking shots.
its macro-mode is amazing. i have an a60 too, but unless i use a macro lens attachment on the a60, the a200 macros turn out distinctly better.
the a200 doesnt have an uncompressed mode, does the a300 have it?
also, u dont get to use P/Av/Tv/M modes on the a200, nor is it ISO programmable. wonder if the a300 has the 800ISO and the > 1sec exposure timings.
as for size, everyone who has taken pics other than party snapshots know that tiny cams are nothing but a fad (unless ur a secret agent who has to shove cams up ur bunghole). u just cant hold them steady to take any sort of serious pics.. even if u use a tripod, the cam's so tiny, ur touching the shutter button gives cam shake.
and truly, the a10/30/40/60/70/80 are as good as cams get in their price ranges. i wuv my a60. its the poor man's SLR. muah!
i think ppl tend to overdo their MPs; the size of a pic u can get with the same quality depends on the square root of the MPs, and so with 3MPs, all you can get is a pic 1.2 times bigger than from a 2MP cam, not worth the extra dollars for me..
you could have gotten the a60 instead.. i got mine for less than 200$, spend $50 on a 256MB CF card at bestbuy.
