Did you guys know that Stuart Wells is playing a character named ‘Allah’ in the new matrix movie, to be released in the summers… Does anyone have any information about this?

yeah, but there are people named jesus. To call someone Allah is to call them God. shrugs-not abt to get into religious war with any guppies I don't really think they should be calling anyone Allah either.

Pakistan99, you are right but this will have no impact on the box office sales of the movie in the places where it has its target audience, but our mollahs and molvis might give some cry over this, and since movies in Pakistan are pirated in the first place, doesnt matter if they are banned or not, one could still rent em easily. There are hundred million names they could have chosen for that character. It seems that the sole intention of this is, to provoke massive reaction from Mullahs and Maulvis around the world, which would then be PR for the movie.
I call this the "Salman Rushdie phenomena".

Yeah, it seems like they're trying to make up for the lame plot.
The sequal is bound to fail if they romance it up. So this name of the character issue will get the crowd coming in to see it.
And dekhna, even our wonderful muslims ummah will be the first ones in line.
The are using the as an expression for the power of that character, for obvious reasons, there are many meanings of the word. Again, haven't u seen or heard anyone who is named "after" God... like Ahmad, Ghafoor, Raheem, Razaq, Noor, Aziz, Kareem...? These are all names of Allah... and it's not like they are restricted to good people only. It's just that no one has ever used the world "Allah", dunno why?
I'm sure it was not done to provoke anyone. No need to "demonstrate" outside cinemas. If they don't even spare there own religion, why expect them to spare urs, if u follow SouthPark they have made a cartoon of God which is so hideously funny, u can't even imagine.
The movie is one of the best sci-fis ever made. And if u really wanna know, I will be the first one in line on the first day... I've already told my boss I'm not working that evening... even though it's still 5 months away!!!

no, p99. u are allowed to give ppl the 99 names of Allah, if u leave out the part that says he is the -ie. U can have someone named Rehman(mercy) as long as they are not Ar-rehman. (correct me if im wrong someone) Have u ever met anyone named Allah? I don’t think u are allowed to name anyone Allah. Allah is not some random name its just the arabic word for the english God. Its like house in urdu is called ghar. I agree with Umer. Tho u’re right, they don’t spare their own either. I’ve seen the Matrix, very good movie (and that Keanu :love: ), ill probly go see the sequels, but i don’t think their use of the name Allah is random-i wonder what this character will be like?

Yes I know no one is named Allah... but why not, I'm not sure about that. I never said the selection was random, it's purposeful and it probably denotes the powerful this character has inside the matrix if he's a computer, or outside it if he's a rebel human being. They wanted to give the character a powerful name, something most people would fear I guess... that's why they choose it.
All this talk of Muslim terrorists and everything and the so many times "Allah-o-Akbar" has been heard on the TV, we're only reacting to that and thinking of this as a sort of negative reaction by the film makers, when the fact of the matter is that this sequel was written even before the first one came out, even character names, and shooting started I think in March 2001.

sadly, i dont pray five times a day or do tilawaat of quraan, i might be one of millions of muslims that people call "naam ke muslman". So, i don't think i have any right to mingle and snoof my nose into this thing.
Some body up there said it won't effect it's box office and gave an example that movies are pirated in Pakistan. Well, most big budget movies get released on cinemas. Spider-man did killer buisness in all the major cities. I went to Pak in '00 and Matrix was still running on some local cinemas and we watched it. So i think Matrix sequals will also be released in Pak.

I would suggest to what and see the movie before jumping to any conclusions! No wonder Muslims get a bad rep for no reason!
I remember a few years ago when " the siege" came out people demonstrated outside theatres. And the sad thing was the movie wasnt even against Muslim..
