Richards ready to coach Team India

http://www.cricketnext.com/news/richards-ready-to-coach-indian-team/24011-14.html

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

Viv Richards was even much better batsman than Greg Chappel.
But Coaching is a different field, and now with the failure of guru Greg- who before joining Indian team was having very little experience in Coaching, India should not try another great “foreigner” again.

Btw…the article in the link doesnot mention clearly regarding Richards intention to coach Indian team?

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

^ I think BCCI should hire Wasim Akram as their team coach. It would be a radical move but it might pay off.
I would like Wasim to coach Pakistan but I know PCB won't hire him.
He would fit in absolutely fine in the Indian side.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

India should appoint seperate bowling and batting coaches, although it seems bit extreme, I will be happy if they can appoint a fielding Coach as well.
With BCCI, funding is not a problem and there are a lots of Coaches who will be eager to join if given good offer.

Yes, BCCI can try Akram as a bowling coach, it will benefit a lot to young bowlers like Munaf, Sreesanth and even Pathan.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

Do people seriously think that another heavy-weight coach in place of Chappel will bring an instant turnaround to the performance of Indian cricket team.

First lets get rid of the passengers in the team. We need to have players with eagerness and hunger to learn. Coaches cannot tell players with the experience of Tendulkar or Gangu or Sehwag , how to bat. Agarkar will remain a compulsive pie-thrower no matter who you make the coach of the team.

If I have to though, I will recommend Sunil Gavaskar for the coach position. He has an aggressive temperament, logical mind and does not like to mince words. Plus his credentials as a former player himself are undisputable. And the fact that he is a desi...will pacify the swadesi crowd.

Cricket-Dravid is a leader, says chief selector

MUMBAI, India, March 28 (Reuters) - India’s chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has come to the defence of Rahul Dravid after the skipper came under fire for his team’s first-round elimination at the World Cup. India, runners-up in the last edition, crashed out in the Caribbean last week after losing two out of three group matches, to Bangladesh and former champions Sri Lanka.
Irate fans in the cricket-crazy country have demanded the axe fall on Dravid and coach Greg Chappell.
“He is an experienced campaigner and has all the leadership qualities,” Debarkations told national daily Times of India on Wednesday.
Vengsarkar recalled former Australia captain Richie Benaud’s comments on the role of the captain: "Captaincy is 90 percent luck and 10 percent ability."
“He (Dravid) has done quite well thus far. After all, as they say, a captain is only as good as his team.”
Vengsarkar said the defeat to Bangladesh was a one-off.
"I feel Bangladesh played its best cricket in that match. I am positive if India plays Bangladesh in the future, it will win nine out of 10 matches.

Sensible comments from Vengsarkar

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

I think steve waugh, who is more accustomed to the modern one day cricket should be a coach. I dont believe sunil pr vivian can do any good to our team. We need somebody with different attitude and new ideas. I think steve is great in this regard.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

^You know I have been thinking about this coaching thing....and I realized that I know very little about what exactly the coach does (and does not do) esp in a desi setup. For example :
- How much say he has in team selection.
- How much say he has in strategizing while the game is in progress.
- How much say he has in things like whether the team should bat/bowl if the team wins the toss , when the team should declare etc.

Some coaches, from what I read, limit themselves to just "coaching" and not "strategizing" - for example they will confine their role to ironing out technique deficiencies, improving fielding skills, running between the wickets.....but will maintain a hands-off-attitude(or will maintain a low profile in) team selection or developing game strategies (which they leave to the Captain). If this is all a coach is expected to do in the Indian setup - I would rather have a professional coach - somebody who has passed the Coaching exams - instead of a big name ex-player who is expected to coach with his "hands tied".

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

^ if Gavaskar become coach I'am afraid he would want Rohan Gavaskar as captain.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

I like the idea of steve waugh as coach :D but i doubt he'll ever accept or Indian board will ever offer him the job.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

I haven’t watched cricket for very long so I don’t know the history very well but has Tendulkar ever gotten the team out of a jam. I mean has there been a time when he scored big when the team wasn’t doing well because every time i’ve seen him he never scores any runs when his team really needs them. Can someone let me know :help:

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

Mallika, its always refreshing to see people from Venus talking serious cricket.

You are spot on about Tendu.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

^he's been making runs here and there, his avg still at high but recently we all know he has been a flop like everyone else on the team under pressure

but he has won plenty of games for India single-handedly, infact India was known as a one man team back in the day, desert storm comes to mind as one of his best innings, and honestly the only way to get him out was a bad umpiring decision or glen mcgrath lol

but this was back in the day...

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

That's the impression most people have. Because he is Tendulkar he must have won many matches for India. Ask them to list those matches specifically...they will say....wait....err....that match in Sharjah where he tore through the Australian attack and "may be" the match against Pak in the last World Cup (though it was Dravid/Yuvraj who really took us to the finishing line).

I do not think anybody is denying the fact that Tendu is a very good batsman (he has to be with that many centuries). The question we are discussing though is about the number of times Tendulkar has taken India out of trouble to victory (note the emphasis on "out of trouble"). The real answer is close to ZERO. He came near to doing that in the Madras test against Pakistan but choked in the end.

Videocon drops ads by Dravid, Dhoni

New Delhi: Following Sansui and LG Electronics, consumer durables major Videocon also decided to stop telecasting the advertisements featuring Indian cricketers.
Videocon chief on Thursday said it would pull off advertisements featuring Indian skipper Rahul Dravid and stumper M S Dhoni to save damage to the brand in the face of India’s disappointing show at the cricket World Cup.
“We have not withdrawn the contract with Dhoni and Dravid, but we have decided to take a backseat and withdraw some of the advertisement insertions featuring the cricketers considering the public hue and cry against them,” Videocon Industries Chairman and Managing Director Venugopal Dhoot told PTI.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

wow I was hoping that I was wrong in my thinking that he's only been a fair weather batman since the beginning. Even when he was younger he was mr. undependable? Still I don't think that they would kick him out. All of India would have a fit.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

**Chappell blames seniors!

** In what could blow the lid-off the way in which Indian cricket functions and the reasons for India’s dismal performance in the World Cup 2007, sources close to Greg Chappell have told TIMES NOW that the coach is going to tell all when he submits his report to the board on April 6.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to question the Indian captain Raul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell on India’s disastrous performance in the World Cup 2007 and the reasons for India crashing out of the World Cup after losing to Bangladesh and Sri-Lanka. The Indian coach has blamed senior players of the team for the World Cup debacle.

The meeting is likely to be attended by few former Indian captains including Sunil Gavskar, Ravi Shashtri, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Kris Shrikanth. The former players along with the board members will pose questions to skipper Rahul Dravid, Coach Greg Chappell and the manager on the reasons behind India’s dismal performance in the World Cup 2007.

The high-powered committee is keen to gauge the real story behind what happened at the West Indies and why India performed so badly.

Key to the postmortem will be two reports – one submitted by the Indian coach Greg Chappell and the other by Tour Manager Sanjay Jagdale.

India’s poor showing at the World Cup has disappointed the coach and his report is believed to severely indict senior players. Chappell had reportedly sent a sms to senior journalist Rajan Bala that questioned the selection of some senior players and the reluctance of the selectors to pick youngsters.

Sources claim that Chappell’s report, which will be submitted on April 6, will point fingers on some senior players. The Indian coach has suggested that the senior players have no regard for management. Amongst those in the dock is Sachin Tendulkar, who is believed to have wanted to open the innings with Sourav Ganguly and not bat down the order as was the coach’s plan. Sachin has scored most of his ODI runs batting at the top of the order and did not appreciate the restrictive role that the number four position often demanded. Other senior players have been questioned for wanting to bat against Bangladesh on a seaming wicket contrary to the game plan. Chappell had advised the team to field first but the senior batsman wanted batting practice, and in the end, came a cropper against the swing of Mashraffee Mortaza.

There are also reports of major differences and groupism within the team members, which led to difference of opinion with the coach, claim sources. Most of these facts are believed to be covered in Chappell’s report, which is likely to further corroborated by manager Sanjay Jagdale, who himself is a selector. Jagdale was manager for the tri-series in Colombo, however, post the series, he reportedly had submitted a report to the board questioning the attitude of several senior players like Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh. However, the report at that time was largely ignored, but now, his report could pose some tough questions.

Now the ball is in the Board’s court. Will it take Chappell’s report seriously and rap the seniors on the kncukles or will the weight and reputation of these men continue to hold sway.

Re: Chappell was not happy with World Cup squad!

A good news! In fact I consider this as a blessing for Indian cricket

The only news after our WC debacle, which gives an indication that we can bounce back if brand-ambssadorgiri is suspended immediately!!

I hope, other companies will follow the trend for the sake of public backlash.
