changing your TV watching habits

How many of you parents (especially those with toddlers to young adults as kids) have stop watching certain shows. Wife and I used to watch Simpsons that we dont watch now. I stopped watching Family Guys and even Futurama when the older one turned 4.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

im gonna havta stop watching tv totally once the little one turns a toddler.. thats how bad daytime tv is in denmark... with pee pees and wee wees flying about everywhere.. sighz.

i remember our dad was big on musical vids from bollywood with just songs.. and he saw me doing a tumka one day... he packed up teh vcr and it didnt come out until us kids were way old enough.. like.. what.. 14.. i clearly remember our first desi flick was dil.. and that didnt go so well with the kissing scene between madhuri and amir.. so it was packed once more .lol :D

plus we lived in arabia so nothing dirty was ever on tv.. :D

Did you just say that Denmark's day time TV has pee pees and wee wees flying about everywhere? What do they show late night if this is what they show during day time?

Re: changing your TV watching habits

most european programming is like that TLK.

I used to watch Law & Order religiously. Now I have to really make sure that she is either engrossed in something else or just flip the channel.

House is another favourite that I can still manage to squeak by with........and NCIS is becoming a bit too graphic with their dead bodies.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

^ time to invest in Tivo, Muzna ..:D

Re: changing your TV watching habits

yes...he's been saying that for over a year.....and I keep telling him that we don't watch enough TV and if we got a PVR we would be watching so much more.......

but that exactly should be the reason. I think PVRs are for both types. One who does not watch enough TV can have their 1 or 2 fav shows recorded and watch whenever. Those who watch too much of TV can watch a show while recording the other.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

but I don't want anyone to be watching TV. ;)
people should be focused on me.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

ahaa... makes sense. You should never buy him a Tivo then ...

Re: changing your TV watching habits

I rarely watch English t.v. … one thing I gave up was my shows from VH1.

Otherwise, I just watch what I need to watch online, when he’s asleep, or on t.v., but again, when he’s asleep. When he’s awake, it’s on the Pakistani channels or Treehouse. :mudhosh: … and I know for sure he ain’t allowed to watch the Cartoon Network. I’m surprised how much garbage they show on there.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

^and disney!!!

Re: changing your TV watching habits

Pakistani channels are no good too, although not as graphic but getting quite suggestive.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

I think it depends on what you are watching.

For example, I was watching the telefilm for this drama on the weekend. I missed the ending and they were repeating it the next day. So I was watching it ... and he was playing .... and the drama was about an abusive man who beats and mentally tortures his sister. I had to change the channel during one scene cause he stopped playing and was looking at the t.v. So it goes both ways ... whatever you watch, be it in English or Urdu, just be aware I guess.

Plus, they have some cute kids shows on Indus. It is kind of corny, but he (and I) enjoy the butterfly and numbers song.

I stopped watching all scary shows supernatural, charlies's angel, smallville and CSA miami,NY, Lasvegas in front of children:( All scary and action movies like SAW , Die hard , cliff hanger , fast and furious they show on TV I am not watching them :(

Re: changing your TV watching habits

Here u cannot even watch advertisments with kids :-( too much naked skin and sex shown.

I have to watch my programs when she is busy with her toys otherwise I don't. One thing I still watch is desperate housewives .. for that my husband takes my daugther to our bedroom and i get to watch it :D

Re: changing your TV watching habits

I try to limit the amount of television viewing i expose my children to. I prefer for them to be engaged in other activities for cognitive stimulation. Anyway, i try not to be too rigid with them and they have a tv in their playroom, which is limited to a couple of children's channels.

Whenever the children are around, we do not watch tv. We'll watch films together (Disney etc) but we don't watch our own preference of programmes (Family Guy, CSI etc) in front of them. We have Sky+ (like US TiVo) so i can record any programmes i want and watch them later in the wee hours of the night, the insomniac that i am. :)

Re: changing your TV watching habits

TLK - I find the simpsons , or cartoon like shows confuse the children even more because they feel like they should be watching it because it's CARTOONS

I DVR everything. (grey's, LOST, DH, CSI, oprah, music videos) or watch them online. I also have a code on the downstairs T.V for all channels that are not appropriate which is about 90% of them.

I cut off B4U music - even though it was the biggest stress reliver because of the exact reason that khawaten stated - as I caught my child "tumkray maraing" and the younger one who was a baby at that time "lifting her shirt to check out her navel"

I show them an occasional "cold play" video or they both adore "fireflies" video.

I do have to thank the paksitani programming (even though they give me a massive headache with all the depressing wailing and crying all the time) for teaching my children a bit of Urdu.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

baby is not even here yet...and i'm trying hubby to let go of his habit of watching hindi movies..... and just when we were planning on getting ALL the channels.... baby decides to come...alhamdulillah....we decided we did not want to get all the channels....

btw I am seeing first hand the detrimental effects of parents letting their kids see anything and everything on tv..... a family friend's 7 year old kid now knows how babies are born thanks to parents letting her watch 3 idiots without any censoring..... not to mention the other things she has picked up from STar plus....

another observation.... this kid and her siblings has no interest in watching dora or any other cartoons... they bore her.... parents need to be sooo careful ....

Re: changing your TV watching habits

All that we watch is Nickelodean & some shows/movies on Disney now :(

Re: changing your TV watching habits

ya.. tv in scandanavian europe is like that… night time tv is full blown pee pees and wee wees bordering on porn… only the gay music in the background is missing thats so common i porn movies… im told :halo:
