changing your TV watching habits

Re: changing your TV watching habits

TLK, that's a really interesting quesiton. We tend to watch NO TV when the little one is up and around. In the unlikely event that the TV is on, it's usually BBC World News, National Geographic, Discovery.

Even if we WANTED to watch TV with her around, it's rather difficult to focus since she needs all of our attention and it would be unfair NOT to give her our entire focus. When she's up and around, 99% of the time, we are on the floor playing with her, teaching her, or going out and exploring nature with her.

ewww

So here we are not watching anything… Do you think European children just grow out of it. I mean they don’t even glance in that direction.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

well their idea is.. its normal and a natural thing.. dont portray it as a big deal and kids wont think of it that way… nothing to get curious bout..

so u can go to a mall and find a topless female child of 11 walking around cuz its THAT hot  and no one will find it odd.. nor will male children be looking at her…

Re: changing your TV watching habits

are u serious, an 11 year old kid topless..... what abt muslim children khawa ...how do parents raise their kids in such an environment...... especially since you really can't cut yourself off.... and here we think we need to keep them innocent for as long as possible..

Re: changing your TV watching habits

it's a good debate - I have heard that european kids are not AS OBSESSED about sexuality as Amercian kids or kids raised in Middle east. Why??

So should we let the simpsons run in the background?

Re: changing your TV watching habits

Isn’t this why so many people raised in Pakistan are considered “frustrated”?

:cb:

Re: changing your TV watching habits

I have to agree on the Disney programming being questionable. We really have to be careful what Noor watches and I try to watch her programs with her......or at the very least be in the same room so that I can be aware and then address certain subjects/concepts with her afterwards.

Hiding stuff from kids is never a good idea. Nor is exposing them to information that they are not yet capable of processing. It's a fine line to be walked.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

what is verdict on kissing scenes? even in cartoons? When are you NOT suppose to bolt out of the room or switch the channel?

Re: changing your TV watching habits

Hahaha Khawa, seriously its so much fun for me to read your experience with DK.. being brought up here you really dont notice it, you know its there of course being a desi.. but reading it from another persons point of view really shows how scary this country is indeed

Re: changing your TV watching habits

we have stopped watching movies, simpson, friends, spongebob and other shows.... sometimes even some scenes in Pakistani dramas make us switch the channel

oh and no news in front of kids ..... we sit with kids when they are watching live programing .... else we have pre screened DVDs and Videos at home for them to view ...

11 years old topless female? holy crap.

I heard that some Scandinavian countries have the same philosophy about drugs. They are openly available and thought process is same. Dont make a big deal out of it and people will not get into the habit as its not longer a taboo.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

wow some of u are very strick ..

I don't think I will limit them to only videos and pre screened .. but will train them to stop watching or change channels if nakedness, sex, kissing wissing comes .. one day they will be old and might be home alone, so they will know its not appriopate to watch such programmes, something like their consciouess will tell them .. mama told u to switch channels .. my parents did this with us and we watched appriopate programmes.

I guess you are missing the point (or i m missing something?) . Point is to change your habits instead of telling your kids to "go to other room coz its not good for kids"....

Re: changing your TV watching habits

you are missing the point too .. here even the ads show sex ... so u want us to even stop watching the news!

the topic is wether we have changed our habits, which doesnt mean the child has to go to the other room.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

Ditto to Decent6

I realize that if I cannot laugh on a joke with my family, its not comedy for me.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

err okay ....

what I get is that change of habit means we change the channel and not "kids have to go to other room"

btw, it also depends on kids. I have a 4 years old and 7 years old and find it too graphic to even watch News in front of them. Everyday they dead bodies and bombs on the news and nothing else.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

Sadia, maybe we are speaking from our experience but if your local TV shows sexual content even in ads then off course what you are doing is the right thing to do.

Re: changing your TV watching habits

yeah TLK ... my daugther 4 is so trained she sees a lad in bikini .. she shouts 'ghaandi' ammi channel change kar do"

but having no TV at all is not something I can do at the moment, as when kids go to sleep its my way of relaxing ... TV and chai.

yeah I know what u mean :(
