Some people believe attending Easter/Christmas celebrations is haram, others believe it is perfectly fine.
Just last Christmas we had a thread on Christmas trees and most people also said there was nothing wrong in bringing home and decorating a Christmas tree.
So what’s the verdict on celebrating Easter by, let’s say, doing the Easter egg hunt at home?
I don't see why we have to go out of our way to organise Easter egg hunts or purchase and decorate Christmas trees. Why should we spend money on these sorts of things, especially since these holidays don't have much of a significance to us?
However, I don't have a problem with buying Easter chocolate or candy canes from the store when we're out grocery shopping. :@: Those are yummy.
So what's the verdict on celebrating Easter by, let's say, doing the Easter egg hunt at home?
It is not Islamic. A real Muslim who is true to his faith wouldn't tolerate shenanigans like that in his house. Maybe in the West people do it to try and integrate in society, set up a Christmas tree at home etc. but IMO it is taking integration a bit too far. You don't see Jews celebrating or participating in Christmas or Easter celebrations do you? Not unless they are only Jewish in name like most Christians out there.
1: It helps to teach your kids about the other culture that they’re living in
2: The same people who won’t celebrate Christmas/Easter will celebrate other hindu inspired traditions such as mehendis etc.
I don’t see anything wrong with wishing someone at work or your neighbours Merry Christmas or Happy Easter. It’s the getting involved act that bothers me. It is true that mehndis etc are hindu inspired traditions but the thing with those customs is that they have been ingrained into our culture after having lived with Hindus for centuries. So while we might think of these traditions as unIslamic it will be a while before they die away.
On the other hand, activities like organising Easter egg hunts in your house and getting your kids involved smacks of wannabe gora behaviour. These aren’t customs that were handed down to you by previous generations, it is you who forcibly trying to make it a part of your culture. It is okay to be flippant about it and say ‘oh but it has no religious connotations’ but it does. No harm in wishing the fellows citizens a happy easter but let them celebrate it, after all they aren’t exactly keen on celebrating Eid or going to pray the Eid namaz, zibahing bakras.
If you're wishing someone, then you're approving of it. That's why it's prohibited. You can politely say we don't celebrate Christman if someone tells you Merry Christmas or soemthing.
Well I will differ with you on that, I don't think there is anything wrong with wishing someone or buying the candy, even if it is egg-shaped. After all, we're cheap desis, we will buy anything on sale and who doesn't love chocolate.
I agree with Rizla. My non-muslim friends wish me happy eid etc and that doesn’t make them less of a Catholic/Atheist whatever. I don’t see anything wrong in wishing someone a merry christmas/easter, Allah swt knows our intentions.
