The devastation brought by the floods is simply indescribable. It brings much grief to read that many homes and lives have been destroyed in these floods. According to various sources, several thousand homes have collapsed and at least 200 people have died in Pakistan. The pictures clearly depict the pain and suffering of all those who have been affected by the floods. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been impacted by the floods. We sincerely hope that they will find the strength to deal with this tragedy.
Two things, first Pakistan is is informed of every water release by India with due diligence. India has always let Pakistan know and provided its satellite data when needed. I am not sure if Pakistan had done the same favor if it was upper riparian. I don’t know what media you follow but Pakistan has never complained about water release schedule of India.
Watch first few minutes of this footage from real experts, not internet experts.
Second, even if India released un announced water then what could have nawaz do, he just came in power last year so its not fair to accuse him for that.
It should also be known that those so called experts and politicians totally ignore the contribution in floods from rains in Pakistan. Once water enters Pakistani boundary (even if India doesn’t inform Pakistan) it knows how much water is coming, it takes few days to come down to Punjab and yet no action is taken, then after further few days the water goes to sindh and they are caught off guard. Its easier to blame things on India, takes away the factor of self responsibility.
I remember when SMQ was FM and one time everyone in pakistan was blaming india for not following the IWT then SMQ said on national TV that India was doing its part just fine but it was in fact Pakistan which was failing to handle its water. He got too much heat for speaking the truth.
Imran Khan does these kinds of political bhunds sometimes. Nobody gives numbers like that, he will learn from this mistake or may be not. He is not a conventional politician.
Doesn’t matter if there are tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands. People do agree with PTI’s stance in general. I do goto Pakistan every second year and do meet people from all demographics. I have yet to come across a person supporting PMLN here in US/Canada and in Pakistan. The most I heard back in 2011 was that IK’s intentions are right but has no team to execute those plans. This is no more an issue.
I do acknowledge that PMLN does have support base in androon e Lahore and central Punjab, but the way they conduct their politics is highly questionable. Using patwaris and police, having badmaash like Rana Sanaullah and local thugs in party, alliance with SSP and LeT etc and having a teenager’s vision to run entire country full of poverty.
Re: Catastrophic rain & flood across Punjab - all rain threads merged
This is what happens when you hold many ministries under your own belt, you run around “24 hours a day to make sure things are done” instead of setting up a system to ensure things are done properly.
First of all, I did not ‘blame’ India in my post, the point was made in response to a poster who tried to put blame on India for the calamity, but I could understand why you would feel like that.
Secondly, you have answered your own question as well as mine. If India is releasing water with prior notice, and the politicians are all aware of it, then why use it as an extended excuse or a lame cover up for their own lack of action and responsibility? This was essentially the argument I made, but I appreciate you for reinforcing it.
Thirdly, there’s a self contradictory proposition in your post. On one hand you suggest that Pakistani politicians must take some self responsibility and proactive steps to deal with rain and water released by India - absolutely correct. But on the other hand, you seems have a problem with Nawaz Sharif being criticised? It seems that you are painting him as some random and unknown political newbie thrown in the deep end? Clearly this is not the case. Since Punjab is worst hit by this natural calamity, it helps to realise that PMLN is in its seventh consecutive year of majority government in Punjab. Nawaz Sharif’s brother who is our defacto deputy Prime Minister is in his third term of CMisp of the province, faced the same situation, pulled exactly the same stunts, made exactly the excuses in 2009. But unfortunately, it seems like no lessons were learnt. And this his is an all valid and legitimate concern and the public ought to talk about it. In the light of all this, I think I’ll take your point about self responsibility and pro-active steps for our politicians.
