I am new to this board so please be nice 
I need help on an assignment relating to the caste systems in pakistan , In particular I need some info on the caste “Khan” do they have sub castes, do they live in any particular region in Pakistan etc etc.
The only bit of info on the net I can find is on Wikipedia , not much I’m afraid.
Any information no matter however little will help.

from what I gathered on wikipdeia khan and pathans are two different caste , unless like Kashmiris you have sub castes Butt, Khawaja ,Mir Mughal etc.
So confusing.Is there a khan on this site , if so bring yourself forward, apparently you are a high caste Muslim :)

Now it seems it is one of the most common names for Pakistanis in the US Phone Books…
So you must be from a place where Castes prevail?..

i agree with the other poster....Khan is not a caste it's just a surname.
Im a khan but unfortunately I dont know much about our history except for the fact that my father's forefathers have some link with Moghuls, afghanistan, and iran.

Thanks for that, so if Khan is your surname what is your caste , can't be Khan can it ?
I know Kashmiris originated from iran so maybe a link there?

My last name is khan but our caste is pathan. I dont think Khans are a type of caste.

yes ure right...khan and pathans are tow diff casts..all pathans are khan but not all khans are pathans.

Im no expert on this subject, but Khan itself isnt a caste. But alot of castes use khan as a surname among pathans/pakhtuns. My surname is Khan. My caste, if you get into specifics, is Umerzai Khankhel. Various other people with surname of Khan might be from different castes/tribes. Imran Khan is Niazi I think... Shahid Afridi is infact Shahid Khan Afridi. In general, Khans are considered to be what you call a Pathan, which are people from the NWFP mainly.
Like, if you hear someones last name to be Khan, you would most likely assume hes a pathan and from NWFP. Its a very widely used surname and has been used among non pathans as a title of respect as well in the past during the times of moghuls and central asia etc. And you will find alot of khans that dont have a pakhtun background these days. So you cant pinpoint it as one particular caste.Hope that helps.
I dont think Khan is a caste, but maybe a group of tribes/sub castes all bundled into one generic word.

All Khans are Pathan, but all pathans are not Khan, ... but majority of Pathans use Khan as their last names! ...
Now Khans have sub casts as well, I am a proud KHAN and my sub caste is Yousuf Zai, we are called as Pathans, and they are spread all over the world, but the origion is either Afghanistan and NWFP areas ...
there are 100s sub caste, but the most famous, educated and high in numbers are Yousuf Zai... they are living in Afghanistan, Pakistan and in india as well!
