caste system is followed when it comes to marriage, both in cities and villages. But in cities in some cases it is breaking up. and also, i will distinguism caste system and caste discrimination. By discrimination i mean oppression. yes, oppression happens. But it is rare, yet it does happen. In the year 2003, I had a right hand experience/saw of it by my own eyes, when some temple priests/brahmins barred a "low" caste women into a temple and didn't offer the food that was being offered in the temple but offered to everyone else!!..she was literally asked to get out of the temple.
wow, that's horrible but was it in a big city or a small town that that situation happened in? Isn't the generation that's growing up right now more tolerant and not so arrogant? I'm thinking that the arrogance from being higher caste will get lesser and lesser as time goes by....slowly but i'm sure it will happen.
That's why I hope that all dalits would convert to Buddhisms so they wouldn't be victims of this kind of discrimination.
thing that i don't understand is why are they resorting to murder? this is america/canada/uk..you do not have the same environment like in home country, you can change place, you can kick your kids out of home, banish them. why kill?

That incident happened in a city called Mysore(city of tippu sultan). that temple is located inside the fort and adjacent to the palace of Maharaja of Mysore. So it is at a pretty important location. and "dalit" conversions have got little to do with religion or spirituality. It is a way or method of protest!!.
well you put an h in there, how was I supposed to know you meant science.
Who isn’t a follower of science…i believe in that more than religion at times.

well yea na, that's why I think he was very mentally unstable and was in dire need of psychological testing/treatment before any of this happened. He might have had some mental disorder and nobody thought to take him to a psychologist. and after this whole caste stupidity he went completely out of control

:D...I am not able to get as to what i believe more at times. if i explain my experience, it goes something like this....
I started off with hinduism...lost faith in certain/most things practiced in it!. Even went to the extent in believing that entire hinduism in practice is a jack!!..It has no significance/use whatsoever(THough i don't agree with this COMPLETELY now)...from hinduism i went islam, but to quickly disagree with it just like hinduism. And from there went to buddhism and jainism, agreed with most of the things that is there. But realized even buddhism and jainism has its own defects(or rather defects later added perhaps just like in all religions)...came across sufism, liked its philosophers, and ofcourse i am into science from the very beginning.and in the process also realized Neither science can dis-prove existence of god nor religion can prove its existence and may be even that there is no such thing called religion. But in the end, Atleast I could finally agree/believe with this message of buddha, "Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said, even if I said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and comman sense"....:D
^That’s an awesome quote by Buddha! I wish more people would understand it though especially the common sense and reason part instead of blindly following anything and everything written in the holy books and then use the excuse that “because my holy book says this, it’s the only viewpoint that’s right and makes complete sense to me” without even questioning it for a second.
lakkis- i never got the sense from my indian colleagues that caste was an issue for them, but then again theya re younger educated and all, this geezer was older and I dont know anything about the educational level.
so you are saying that among teh uneducated in India it is not an issue? I would have thought otherwise but I am not an expert on India
it is pretty shocking,
i'm from Andhra Pradesh,
the most dominated castes here are
1) REDDY ( rich people , dominated in all areas except films)
2) CHAUDHARY ( very rich and dominated )
3) KAPU ( abt 22% in population but no unity )
here even the films are watched based on caste( major heros belong to either Chaudhary or Kapu), Reddy's add their caste to their surname and others don't so in case if you don't know the other guy's caste, just ask whose films he watches more?:), the most of the members of the fans association will be the same caste of that of hero,
even in universtiies they have seperate hostels for different caste, this type of crap is more in coastal belt, which is very developed and rich part in the state
in politics, Reddy( 15% of population out of 294 MLA 's 102 are Reddy's) & chaudhary's (3% population) dominate the state politics, Reddy Supports Congress and Chaudhary support TDP (Telugu Desam Party a regional party)
In USA we have Assocaition first it was TANA (Telugu Assocaition of North America) it is fully dominated by chaudhary's so they started a new one American Telugu Association ( dominated by reddy )
I'm a Reddy :) , i never seen such crap unless i came out from my district, because we don't have caste discrimination in my place, because 40% of population is of same caste Reddy
there are no muslim converts in the state but people who are converted to christianity still follows the caste system
it is even worse in tamilnadu, each caste have their own political party
you may even surprised if i say in usa they asked about my caste when i'm looking for a shared accomadation
