Muslim ambassadors to Denmark protest against Prophet Mohammed cartoons

COPENHAGEN – The ambassadors of Muslim countries to Denmark have protested against 12 newspaper caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed in a letter to Denmark’s prime minister, his office said on Thursday.

An Islamic group also threatened to carry out attacks in the Scandinavian country over the affair, media reported.

Images of the prophet are considered blasphemous under Islam.

The 12 drawings by two cartoonists, which appeared in Denmark’s largest circulation daily Jyllands-Posten on September 30, have drawn criticism from across the Muslim community in Denmark, with religious leaders insisting that they are an insult to the Prophet and calling for an official apology.

In a letter to Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, diplomats from Arab countries and Pakistan, Iran, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Indonesia said that they were offended by the caricatures and demanded an official apology from the newspaper, the prime minister’s office said.

They requested a meeting with Rasmussen, who is also in charge of media affairs, to express their concern about what they perceive as anti-Muslim and anti-Islam campaigns in the press and certain far-right political circles.

Last week as many as 5,000 Muslims demonstrated in Copenhagen against the paper and the drawings, which depicted Prophet Mohammed in different settings. In one of the drawings he appeared with a turban shaped like a bomb strapped to his head.

Meanwhile, an Islamic group calling itself Glory Brigades in Northern Europe issued threats against Jyllands-Posten and Denmark on the Website www.internet-haganah.us, Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende reported in its online edition.

AFP was unable to find the link and it was unclear whether it was later removed from the site, but Berlingske Tidende said in its report that it showed Copenhagen images with the caption: “The Mujahideen have numerous targets in Denmark. Very soon you will regret this.”

The editors of Jyllands-Posten meanwhile stood by their cartoons and rejected the diplomats’ demand for an apology in the name of freedom of expression.

“We live in a democracy where satire and caricature are generally accepted, and religion should not set limits on that,” chief editor Carsten Juste said.

Islam is the second religion in Denmark after the Evangelical-Lutheran state church, with some 180,000 members or 3 percent of the population.

Last week a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of issuing death threats to the two cartoonists.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

...typical secularite behavior...

Reminds me of an "artist" who made a sculpture of the Virgin Mary out of Elephant dung...you'll always get these whack jobs who defend it in the name of "freedom"...naturally, such expressions have zero intellectual value and so serve only to incite.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

It is wrong to play with the religious sentiments of any community. I hope that Muslims will protest peacefully.

Syndicated Cartoon Portrays Muhammad as Terrorist

Prophet of Islam shown driving nuke-laden Ryder truck

Posted: 18 Shawwal 1423, 23 December 2002

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/23/02) - A national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today expressed outrage at a Doug Marlette syndicated editorial cartoon, headlined "What Would Mohammed Drive?" showing the Prophet Muhammad driving a nuclear bomb-laden truck similar to that used by Timothy McVeigh in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for an apology from Marlette's syndicator, Tribune Media Services, and from his employer, the Tallahassee Democrat.

The cartoon is apparently a play on a recent light-hearted public debate over what kind of car Jesus would drive. Its publication comes following worldwide outrage over a similar accusation of terrorism against Muhammad by American evangelist Jerry Falwell.

"Defamatory attacks on Islam and on the Prophet Muhammad by media outlets or religious leaders only serve to harm our nation's image worldwide and divide America along religious lines. Unfortunately, it now seems to be 'open season' on Islam in certain religious and political circles," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. Awad also objected to what he termed a "racist and stereotypical" portrayal of "Muhammad." (Muslims object to any visual representations of the Prophet.)

"By learning more about the Prophet Muhammad , people of conscience will discover that he was a prime example of tolerance and mercy," said Awad. He suggested viewing the documentary, "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet," aired recently on PBS.

The cartoon is the latest in a series of negative religious portrayals addressed by CAIR. The group recently protested the depiction of a Jesus-like figure in a TV Guide Channel commercial promoting professional wrestling. After being contacted by many concerned Muslims, the network cancelled the commercial. (Muslims revere Jesus as a prophet of God.)

Hundreds of Muslims also contacted the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper to protest another editorial cartoon that linked Islam with intolerance and violence. The newspaper later issued a clarification of the cartoonist's intent.

ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be POLITE. Hostile comments will only serve to further harm the image of Islam and Muslims.)

Contact the Tallahassee Democrat to request an apology for their defamatory attack on the Prophet Muhammad .

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

so much for monotheism, you clowns worship your prophet 10x more than Allah.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

We don't ask Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to forgive us and help us become better people, etc. do we? We ask Allah for that. There is a difference between respect and worship.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

who says we are okay with pics/depictions of Allah :hoonh:

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

And praise brutal murders as if that is sunnah is more than the other tenets taught by the prophet.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

r u any ashamed to adress us about ur religion ? wat is it btw ?

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

People wouldn’t riot and murder over a fellow human being they “respect” being insulted. Muslims view their prophet as a near perfect (more than human) being and worship him, ironically, even more than the average x-stian worships Jesus.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Gross generalization or is it ignorance? Muslims dont worship the Prophet, they try to emulate his life as depicted in Quran or Hadith etc.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

yeah, OK. Your prophet would issue death threats, riot & kill if someone insulted him? These types of acts go far, far beyond emulation... It's fanatical worship, plain and simple.

Re: Cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Look who’s talking, a cross worshipper.
