Re: Democratic arguments on Danish cartoons
Are you guys forgetting the reaction Mel Gibson got from (I shall define them as) “fundamentalist” Christians and Jews while filming the Passion of the Christ? They certainly were not peaceful and there was quite a lot of controversy towards the movie, and even now with The DaVinci Code.
Sure, nobody is burning empty buildings or anything like that, but they definitely made continuous death threats towards lovely Mel and all of his cast and crew and wouldn’t stop with the protests even after the movie was released.
What amazes me is that this was a blatantly racist series of cartoons made in a land where the society is supposedly ‘western’, ‘civilized’, ‘tolerant’ and where all people are supposedly equal. That is what the ‘West’ represents, right?
Majority of people like most of the users on GS (please, don’t generalize all of us as “mullah fanatics” due to the few individuals some of you butt heads with in World Affairs) come to the West looking for a better life. Our parents came here to give us a better future. The horizon in the ‘West’ is supposedly better for us, the future is better here for us which is why we live here, and yes, we expect better treatment (i.e. basic equality) than what we would be getting had we stayed in our native countries. Many of us love and cherish the freedoms and lives we have here. How do you think it makes us feel when someone who we think has accepted us as their own makes some disgusting cartoons mocking us based on pathetic stereotypes which people already DO believe about us? One would never dream of making cartoons like that of Christians/Jews … yet why is it acceptable to demonize Muslims like this? Are we not the same type of human beings that deserve the same sense of decency and respect that is given to others? Some of you just don’t get that this was racism that incites and promotes hatred, negative stereotypes and misconceptions, particularly for the ignorant. It has nothing to do with free speech and really is no different than what those “crazy Mullahs” are doing … the racism is just presented in a different manner.
The thought of Muslims even being remotely upset by what happened … well you just don’t understand why, do you? That is what baffles me. It’s hatred in its purest form turned into a joke. It’s not something that can just be laughed off. It was racism that was openly presented and published in many European papers. You are going down a very dangerous road when you make it acceptable to make racist statements like this for a select group of people only (Muslims) without having to be held accountable for.
Please, don’t turn this into, “well look at what them Muslims are doing in the Middle East”. The comments I read here make it sound as if you believe all of us Muslims are violent and I’m quite sick of it just like you guys are sick of the “white trash” statements. Nobody in Canada or America has gone out on the streets and done anything violent since the cartoons came out, yet our mosques in Quebec and other cities have been attacked.
Anyway, after reading the comments in World Affairs and other areas on GS, I don’t even know what makes you think that those fringe elements are even remotely controllable by us … as if our protesting in the streets and burning down buildings (which is what a few of you have suggested we do in response to the killings of innocents in the name of Islam) will some how stop this fringe element from carrying out their atrocities. As if they will put down their weapons and say, “yes, you are right”. They are **BEYOND CONTROL **which is what many of you just don’t get. Many “mullahs” have openly condemned the suicide bombings and any attacks on innocent people, yet those are conveniently ignored … it’s a lot easier to focus on the fanatics.
Anyway, I digress … I was talking about Europe. If you want to demonize Osama Bin Laden and his posse, by all means go ahead. When you attack an individual who truly has nothing to do with current events, a peaceful man who is the Messenger of God, well you are going to hurt some feelings and cause a reaction.
What this journalist did was demonize a beloved Prophet and basically all followers of Islam … but again, you guys just don’t get it – but it’s not you, your faith or your feelings that have been hurt cause the racism wasn’t towards you, it was towards us.
Yeah, we are sensitive “cry babies”, particularly after 9/11. The sweeping generalization that has become pretty common that we are all a bunch of backward terrorists is hard enough to deal with everywhere we go, be it in the office or with friends or even when on vacation in the Caribbean
, and this is just another unnecessary slap in the face.
I expect this kind of intolerant trash coming from truly intolerant states in other parts of the world. I don’t expect this kind of behaviour from ‘advanced’ and ‘civilized’ European countries, especially after the treatment of Jews during WWII.
Freedom of speech ends when it becomes an incitement for hatred.
