Non-Muslims do not think it is a big deal. Do you freak out when you eat beef, worried that you will offend a Hindu?
Non-Muslims beleive that the reaction is worse than the cartoons, and there is very little you can say or do to convince us otherwise.
When there was a big scandal involving Catholic priests molesting children, do you think the Catholocs were spared any commentary? Of course not every Priest molested. It is unfair to paint all priests with the evil deeds of a few?
YOU think the issue is the image of the Prophet. WE think the issue is Muslim violence. That was the analogy of the cartoons, that is what someone wanted to communicate to you. Much like the crisi of the Catholic church, the ridicule will not cease until the problem is solved. The Catholic Church eventually began to realize that the solution was not to deny the problem and spirit away the priests to some monestary. Eventually they confronted the problem, and solved it.
Knowing the over reaction of Muslims, I anticipate more baiting on the issue, not less. Brace yourselves.
