I have read the ayat, the hadeeth, and this is nto the first time I have discussed this. maybe the first time I have discussed this on GS.

If one understands the context of the surah and what it is really saying, yeah.

There is a HUGE difference between spying on an army of some islamic state (which btw dont exist) and giving secrets to the enemy

versus

observing a bunch of nutjobs and calling the cops if the nutjobs yipyap indicates that they may harm some ppl.

Unfortunately he's not gonna be a able to see the difference and will just run away calling you Mushrik and accusing you of causing 'Fitnah'.

Islamic state or not, spying against the state is a crime everywhere and you are correctly called a traitor for doing so. It's obvious that the Quranic verses refer to the same thing. But the ones who sympathise with violent extremists, will twist Quran into supporting their perverted view, and if we disagree with them, we are the ones who are misguided.

OH yeah of course, disagreeing with some fanatics must mean that we are supporting violence by Israel. There can be no position for peace right? Opposing violence against civilians in the name of Islam is tantamount to accepting violence against Muslims, right? Yes, pile it on. I am a traitor and a sell-out, I should be killed. Let's see which one of my fellow Muslim brothers does it first and earns 72 virgins for eternity.

yep, This is the approach..take words of people hadeeth narrated and selected by people years after the prophets passing, rulings of scholars from centuries ago, whether it is imam malik, jaffar, who over, interpretations of maududi, statements ot israr ahmed, when they suit your purpose.

See it in black and white, be unable to accept that when ppl interpret, there are different viewpoints..

and then turn something which is clearly written regarding a war between an islamic state's army and an enemy, to equate with calling cops on lowlife thugs.

turn it into a 'helping the enemy of muslims' discussion all they want. There is a huge difference between being a spy for israel into iran or lebanon and telling them about the movement of iranian forces or location of facilities..versus...telling cops in the country that you live in that some fringe fanatical loony psychos are planning to hurt your community, your neighbours, co-workers, friends, etc.

All I can say is steer clear of me in that case, because if I run into someone who is talking smack like that. I am placing a call to FBI or cops right away.

I mean pretty interesting situation if you heard someone talk about blowing some place up and you walk away, and then yer kid's school gets blown up, or the bldg yer brother works in. right..so why wouldn't you try to do something that would help safeguard other ppls brothers and kids etc etc.

Oh yeah I forget..for some odd reason supposedly Allah tells us not to tell cops about criminals...according to some ppl. Maybe they are looking out for themselves or their cohorts.

a hypothetical situation..

You're company transfers you to their office in Tel Aviv, and now you're living there for lets say, two years, with your entire family. Your kids are there, go to school and your wife goes to work too.

You find out, through some of the muslim circles, that a certain group from some of the neighboring muslim states are plannign to do a big time attack on Israel, probably Tel Aviv, what would you do then?

I wouldnt want my neighborhood school to be blown up. I have a duty of safeguarding my neighborhood too.

should it? if that is so, then the statements that I posted by scholars earlier would indicate that spying in all conditions is kewl. (which is not what I am saying)
However, teh counter argument here from sherafgan is that spying is not allowed in any circumstances.

we are already at a point where there is no proof that there is one answer for every situation.

I would not mind it being proven otherwise, but I dont see that yet.

if i knew there were some people planning to blow up a building or something like that, i'd personally inform the cops about it. better yet, i'd take my camera and record it if i could so they can't escape justice.
