Canada's 2004 elections (MERGED)

yeah…we are having elections in our igloos this year. Guys/gals, what will it be? Let’s hear your crystal ball predictions. Will the Liberals hang onto a majority ? Will the Conservatives actually gain more seats than the Liberals? Will they form a coalition with the BQ? Will the NDP gain more seats ? Will Harper’s party gain more seats in Ontario ? Do you think PM Martin can stop the decreasing popularity in the polls he is currently suffering - or is the damage irreparable?

What do you think the outcome will be? Any surprises? i think hotspots to watch for, may be in BC and Ontario in particular. A Globe&Mail poll yesterday or day before yesterday indicated that the Liberals and Conservatives are almost neck and neck in popularity; 37% for Martin as opposed to 34%. So it’s almost anyone’s call… but voters have notoriously short memory spans sometimes… Martin could still turn this around as the elections are still over three weeks away.

Plz don’t let my thread die, folks :stuck_out_tongue: Someone respond, IF even out of pity :~/

Here in Quebec it seems that Liberals have already conceded defeat. I hardly see any sign posts for Liberal candidates while on the other hand BQ and conservative candidates are having a field day.
Just when I thought things couldnt go any worse for the Liberals, we have two stupid MPs heckling Harper yesterday, which obviously backfired, and Martin was on damage control today.
Harper has every reason to be confident - he confessed today that Quebec and the West have already rejected Liberals, and the only province left now was Ontario.
Personally I am a bit worried about the Conservative platform - they dont look much different than the Hawkish NeoCon Republicans. I hope if Conservative do form a govt, its a hung parliment.

i think ontarians will reject liberals this year. huge taxes and lack of fundings to education and health care has left Ontarians with bitter taste. i dont like paul martin anyways.. he wasnt elected in the first place.

Canada, isn't that like a really cold suburb of Detroit? Lotta trees, snowmobiles, and stuff. They are going to have an election?

LunaticCalm, Quebec was another hot-spot i should have mentioned in my original post. Yes the Liberals will take a beating there i think. It’s weird that the Conservatives could possibly form a coalition with the Bloc Quebecois - i mean, to me, the Conservatives are a very regionalized western-Canadian party, and sort of anti-French, pro-American, if you know what i mean. The BQ is exactly the opposite - a very regionalized eastern-Canadian party, pro-French and somewhat anti-US if you know what i mean.

Yeah that was kindof stupid of Martin to send those MPs - what did he gain by it? The Conservatives did the same thing (they sent two of their MPs too) but Martin got worse media attention for it.

Suroor, The funny thing is - technically speaking, we never directly elect our next Prime Minister, only our Member of Parliament from the political party we endorse. Yeah the Liberals are tasting defeat in Ontario, which used to be one of their strongholds.

OG, You see that huuuuuuge amount of land way up north to where you live? Guess what  People actually live there. And we got roads, buildings, and  skyscrapers too!!! We even have our own airports!!! Come up here sometime for a visit; i promise you won’t get eaten by a bear/moose/beaver/grizzly/elk/deer/raccoon.

You guys have skyscrapers? When did that happen? It's probably about time that you had some elections then!

Do the bear/moose/beaver/grizzly/elk/deer/raccoon get to vote too? That would be nice, as some are more intelligent than hockey players!

:konfused: Are you sore cuz a wee lil Canadian team that no one had previously heard of, managed to kick some (American and other Canadian) hockey butts and they’ve taken the NHL by storm ? Now, now, don’t be jealous - the Stanley belongs up here :stuck_out_tongue: We’re bringing the Cup back this year to its rightful home.

Skyscrapers… we just got them this year actually. Just in time for the elections. :hula: Maybe next year, we might even build highways, who knows. Canada is a very dynamic country.

I was watching a fight one time and a hockey game broke out. Only hosers follow hockey....

Good luck on your election thingy. And highways are sooo cool!, You are gonna love 'em! Might have to plow them though...

I would come up to say hi, but I think it is just a clever ploy to give me SARs to rid Gupshup of me. :)

OG, i am shocked! i would never do that to you :p If you visited here, i might bore you to tears by taking you to some beautiful scenic places, and stuffing you with maple syrup, but i'd never want to give you SARs. We need you around gupshup - diversity of opinion enriches everything, even this WA forum.

Would you promise to wear a face mask to make me feel safer, and not cough or breathe my way?

Better yet, agree to no mention of Chomsky, Fisk, The Guardian, The Independent, or any other crazy discredited lefty, in a cheap attempt to give me a heart attack or stroke?

Those are my terms, and I might come see you and your groovy country. :snooty:

A face mask? :hoonh: Okay okay fine :stuck_out_tongue: i won’t even look your way, how’s that ? sheesh.

:~| i solemnly swear to thee, OhioGuy, that if you come there shall be no mention whatsoever of Chomsky, Fisk, Guardian, Independent, BBC, Hanan Ashrawi, ZMag, John Pilger, Denis Halliday, UN, Nelson Mandela, and Kofi Annan. i solemnly pledge not to mention politics whatsoever infront of you. You must reciprocate, however, and promise not to give my poor little heart a shock so please do not mention any names beginning with George and ending with Bush. That way, you can avoid having the unpleasant experience of seeing me puke all over myself.

Deal?

No George Bush? Deal, I did not vote for him anyway.

As a common courtesy, I will not mention Rumsfeld, Cheney, Pearl, Rice, Feith, or Wolfowitz.

Deal. :D

OK, there is a tree. There is another tree. Ohhh, there is a really pretty tree.......

Should be some fun!

Trees???!!! i'll take you to glacier-tipped skiing mountains, OG, that rival skiing slopes in Europe! :p Dipped your toes in the Atlantic? Or does the Pacific suit you? We can have that as well. Whale-watching/skiing/hiking/rockclimbing/warming your toes by a fireplace in a cottage in the middle of nowhere - you name it, we got it.

So neither of us will mention any political figures whatsoever. :D i think we will get along just fine that way :D

Should give you a chance to breathe some unpolluted air too :D j/k!

Well, I live in Newport RI, and we have a nice piece of the Atlantic here. Not much pollution.

Everything must be very nice in the two months you have daylight, and if I need whale watching, I can go to Lane Bryant.....

But, you do make it sound very nice! :D

Okay, okay, so you got the Atlantic and you got whale-watching. Fine :p

i am going camping to a canyon with waterfalls at the end of this month, by the way... i'll post some pics from there in the Image Forum. i think that will entice you to come :D

That would be cool!

Don't let a bear eat you or anything. The pics should be good.....

Waterfall might be unfrozen by then....

And I do have fond rememberances of the itchies from my youth....

The waterfall doesn’t remain frozen when it’s June :stuck_out_tongue: And it will be late June if not early July when i’m going so it should be thawed out by then :stuck_out_tongue:

We don’t get “itchies” here cuz i go properly prepared with all the proper medication just incase and covered up etc :snooty:

i’m sure you won’t mourn me if a bear does eat me… :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah i’ll post the pics when i return. Should be fun. i am looking forward to it.

"i’m sure you won’t mourn me if a bear does eat me… "

Awww, that is not true! I absolutely adore you! You are my favorite hair-on-fire, lefty-leaning, Chomsky-quoting, tree-hugging guppy.

I might feel sorry for the bear though!

Ermmm.... sorry to interrupt... whats happening with the Canadian elections, by the way?

ps: :-D

OG, You adore me? awww. Thanks. :flower1: You are my favourite Rhode Islander guppy. :flower1:

Faisal Bhai, :o You had to get all serious on me. What’s happening with the Canadian elections - here’s a recap: basically we have four main federal political parties - the Liberals (that currently are in power), Conservatives (mostly a western Canadian regionalized party), the Bloc Quebecois (Quebec’s), and the New Democrats (a small party, doesn’t gain too many votes). Liberals were riding high in the polls but they took a beating due to some financial scandals that erupted as a result of former PM Chretien’s corporate friends doing certain things (wasting millions of dollars for starters). So, the current Liberal PM, Paul Martin, is taking the heat for that. It is predicted by some pundits that the Libs won’t be able to hang onto a majority government. There is some talk of the BQ and Conservatives forming a coalition govt to beat the Liberals.

Meanwhile, surprisingly a green party like the NDP is making a few strides here and there. Ontario may go towards the Conservatives although historically that has been a very strong home for the Libs. But they’ve become unpopular with Ontarians recently for diff issues (Suroor mentioned a few).

The elections are on the 28th of this month. i trust you will be glued to your tv set all that day for the latest, hottest news regarding Canada’s latest elections :stuck_out_tongue: Things to watch out for: how many ridings will the Libs lose particularly in BC, Quebec, and Ontario, and how many of those seats will be made up by gains for the Conservatives, BQ and NDP.
