Canada

Has anyone (British or other European national) faced any harassment whilst entering Canada?

The UK is too expensive to live in, and I am eyeing alternative nations for myself. Canada ranks highly, but I am weary of discrimination ect.

Thanks,

Re: Canada

It's like the UK, just with less soul but a lot cheaper.

I plan to move back to England one day. In terms of race relations feels the same.

The job market here sucks. I wouldn't recommend coming here without a job.

Re: Canada

Hmm... i also thouht to move to Uk or buy a house there.
Is it really that expensive there???

Re: Canada

UK is cripplingly expensive. Esp London.

I see the prices in Ottawa property, and my eyes light up. 4/5 bedroom homes for $350,000 Canadian. Thats about ~ £170,000....hella cheap!

Re: Canada

wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Re: Canada

leg,

what industry are you in?

Re: Canada

speaking of job market, why does it suck so bad in Canada?

In this year alone 3 of my acquaintances/friends have moved to US as they couldn't find work in Canada.

Re: Canada

and amareeka is cheaper then kanada

Re: Canada

^^ Highly subjective to where in amreeka we talkin - but in general. I don't think so :)

Re: Canada

really??

Re: Canada

Anyopne belonging to England shouldn't worry about discrimination in Canada, European racism in general and English in particular is the worst.

Re: Canada

No way. I felt much more accepted in England than in any of my business trips in Europe.

Poland was the worst. It was the only place I’ve ever been to on business where I was told by the people at work to take care outside the office because of the colour of my skin.

THAT never happened in England.

Re: Canada

Maddy, how do you feel accepted?

Re: Canada

From job market point view, of course US is the best choice.
So far, i haven't gone through any discrimination here, Alhamdulillah. But some incidents do happen. In general, i'd say it's not that bad so far. But there's no guarenty things would remain cool in future as well. Incidents like recent arrests do contribute in changing the environment.... and u never know what'll be the next.

Re: Canada

Depends, do you have a reason/ concern about being harrassed by Canadian authorities?

Re: Canada

^ Yes he does. His skin might be too tanned for their liking. Or for that matter, any cracker's liking.

Re: Canada

Say what?! We're having record unemployment here...:)

I suppose it depends on the field...

Re: Canada

...and this is considered expensive by local standards (we're in a bit of a bubble it seems)...

Re: Canada

If you're landing in Toronto, you're more likely to get racist remarks coming from other minorities than from whites...

In any of the big cities, you'll be fine.

Re: Canada

It depends where you have been brought up. At the end of the day you will face soem sort of discrimination no matter where you are. If you accept this and then start looking you will face a better chance.

The following countries are a No No

Poland
France
Russia

Good countries include UK, Germany (A bit ignorant of our values), Canada and USA

Canada is booming at the moment in jobs but only if you have some experience in some field of engineering. Especially Mechanical and process engineering.

UK is quite expensive to live in

The states is OK but I see bad times ahead.

In fact I see bad times ahead everywhere.
