Only after long term exposure… even then it might be a psuedo persona which is not a reflection of reality… other people you can read like a book becuase they are the same in real life and on the internet… ![]()
Re: Can you get a real sense of a person's true personality over the internet?
No, not really. On internet you can be what you want to be, but in real life people often turn out to be completely different than what you may have imagined them to be.
A person who may seem 'seedha saadha' on internet may well be the opposite in real life or vice versa. It's quite hard to get a real sense of a person's true personality/image based on their internet activities.:)
Re: Can you get a real sense of a person's true personality over the internet?
^ fair points in the majority of cases your right.
Heck even the most geniune internet persona's are either a hyper extension or a underscore of the real persona. :)
Re: Can you get a real sense of a person's true personality over the internet?
no...some are better actors than others...you can never know the true self of the person sitting on the other side unless u spend some time together and even then there isn't any guarantees. it's shear luck that you get what you expected, i would say.

I'm not sure I can get a real sense of a person's personality offline either.
Bukowski comes to mind, in a roundabout sort of way;
The Secret
Don't worry, nobody has the
beautiful lady, not really, and
nobody has the strange and
hidden power, nobody is
exceptional or wonderful or
magic, they only seem to be
it's all a trick, an in, a con,
don't buy it, don't believe it.
the world is packed with
billions of people whose lives
and deaths are useless and
when one of these jumps up
and the light of history shines
upon them, forget it, it's not
what it seems, it's just
another act to fool the fools
again.
there are no strong men, there
are no beautiful women.
at least, you can die knowing
this
and you will have
the only possible
victory.

Re: Can you get a real sense of a person's true personality over the internet?
Online trust is a complex issue - firstly, we all have our predispositions to trusting or mistrusting others... on top of these, trust evolves over time for all of us.
Compared to face-to-face situations, online situations require more time. The more multidimensional your interactions are, the better position you're going to be in - e.g. if I just interact with someone on the public forums, I'm not as likely to know a person as well as I would if I were to interact with them through chatting, instant messaging, online collaboration etc. for purposes other than just casual chitchat.
