Can we impose cultures

On our next generations?

generations who are brought up in different environments?

Re: Can we impose cultures

Culture I believe is an ever evolving thing. The west has imposed their cultures on aboriginal communities in Canada, US, Newzealand and Australia. We see Spanish culture in Latin America, and now due to globalization we see the impact English and their media is having on Pakistan.

Re: Can we impose cultures

True Ali.

But I'm talking of individual level. Like people who migrated to some other country and their children brought up there. Would that be justified if such people want to impose their roots and culture on their children, who never observed that culture an can't relate to that.

Re: Can we impose cultures

^ Do you think that is imposing one's culture? I think that its important for the kids to know their culture and roots, as when those kids visit family members back in Pakistan they feel left out.

Re: Can we impose cultures

If they teach them language, they will self sufficient to maintain cultural values at least.

Re: Can we impose cultures

May from parents point of view its not imposition, but children may take it uncomfortable imposition, if they don't feel attachment to their parent's culture

Re: Can we impose cultures

Not necessarily, language doesn't automatically bring proximity to culture. Say I learn Quranic Arabic, that doesn't automatically make me follow Arab culture

Re: Can we impose cultures

yes, we should adopt ALL the good ones that are NOT against our religious beliefs and shun all those that are bad ones and are contradictory to our faith...this cultural imparting must be done in a wise, mild manner and on a voluntary basis...there is NO compulsion in Deen so, with the same token, we must not force kids into practicing cultural aspects of our lives...it can be ingrained in them slowly early in their lives.

Re: Can we impose cultures

Quranic Arabic is different then current spoken Arabic.

Re: Can we impose cultures

ok.. but language be it Quranic Arabic or spoken Arabic doesn't make you follow Arabic culture, unless you follow those who believe that many Islamic practices are derived from Arab culture

Re: Can we impose cultures

the the ONLY way language can help you culturally is to bring the vast collection of literature which shows the true culture...novels are the great way to learn and understand the language, culture and it's intricacies.

Re: Can we impose cultures

I wanted to agree with your comment, but then I realised that Punjabi literature is not there, but the language is flourishing

Re: Can we impose cultures

that's what is wrong with Pakistani Punjabi...Indian Punjabi has a vast and rich Khazaana of literature. it's because Pakistanis did NOT adopt Gurmukhi script...they got stuck with Urdu...same is true with Gujrati.

Re: Can we impose cultures

But Punjabi Language still survives in Pakistan. As far as India is concerned, Punjabi was more promoted through bollywood then literature. Not everyone got liking for literature BTW

Re: Can we impose cultures

Punjabi in Pakistan survived because they speak the language but i think Urdu is taking over and from major cities in Pakistani Punjab Urdu has almost taken over...the Punjabis living in those Punjabi cities think it's kinda painDoo to speak Punjabi so they consider Urdu as the language of the Elite...they are shying away from teaching Punjabi.

in Indian Punjab, the language and it's literature is promoted at every level...from schools to the universities and thru literary forums/platforms.

Re: Can we impose cultures

Ok KKF coming to topic, you said that good traditions from a culture should be imposed by parents on children. Don't you think that 'good' is a vague term which vary from person to person and culture to culture?

Re: Can we impose cultures

Whatever was good/attractive/effective for someone's parents, it's not necessary that it will be attractive or effective for their kids too, time changes, value changes.

Re: Can we impose cultures

so you are of the view that culture should not be imposed, because it can't be imposed

Re: Can we impose cultures

We should teach them, and make our self an example for them, but we shouldn't force them if they are not interested.

Re: Can we impose cultures

It's a fine line, if the kids are not taught about their own culture and religion in western society, it's very easy to lose them. As they will become strangers to their own culture.
