Phir mere bhai yeh kis song mein aata hai ~ mujhe yaad nahi aa raha
saath dil k chalay dil ko nahi roka humnay
jo naa upna tha ussay toot k chaha humnay
aik dhookay mein katy umer humari saari
kia baatain kissay paaya kissay khoya humnay
Aah ko chahiye ik umr asar hone tak
kon jeeta hey teri zulf ke sar hone tak
The verse in question needs to be accompanied with the first line or it won't make much sense. Someone gave a better explanation:
[My] longing [for you] requires a lifetime for its realization
Who may live that long to see its effect [achievement of wish]?
For me, "jeeta" here could also be construed as patience, perseverance or determination.

Amal just explain the second misra' and tell me how would you do it :D?
To see just a misra to understand the meaning was mind bogling... it means a lot needs to be learn about poetry as well..
For me, "jeeta" here could also be construed as patience, perseverance or determination.
Evilmastermind and AQ, please consider this ^ thought of mine also. It generalises the concept and putting it in simple words, it means that sometimes realization of wishes and dreams are so difficult to come through that determination to achieve that longing runs out of steam and one comes to think that its better to move on.
Urdu meiN hi try kar raha tha, nahi ban saka :( Aur wesey bhi sirf "jeeta" wali definiation meri apni hey, otherwise it was defined by someone else in English.
Now look at the sher in that perspective and tell me if your understanding takes on a different dimension or not :)?
Well, please allow me to differ with you Anwaar. I don't think you can term it Ehsaas-e-Mehroomi or Bay sabaati-e-Aalam. I may be wrong, but it's not fitting my scheme of things here. I will stand by my earlier understanding of the entire sheir. But if you make the second verse stand alone, we may go a little further on that too:
Koun jeeta hai tere zulf ke sar honay tak
• jeeta remains the same as I explained earlier. It could be patience, perseverance or determination.
• zulf could be a dream, a wish, a target, an aim or just anything.
• sar is realization of that dream or achievement of that wish.
So I could only paraphrase that: sometimes realization of wishes and dreams are so difficult to come through that determination to achieve that longing [dream » target » aim] runs out of steam and one comes to think [out of frustration] that its better to move on.
naheeN BL.. jung naheeN.. I am trying to understand what is the thought really working behind that is different than what I understood.. hence, my counter questions.... so far, it seems productive :)
Definitely not. I will be the last the challenge AQ's interpretations. I am only explainging my own humble understanding and I fully acknowledge that I could be totally wrong :)
hmmm.. I see what you are saying Amal ... I read it few times.. makes sense.... perhaps take that one line out again and read the whole sentence.... 'Jeeta' has a "kaun" infront... which totally puts the perseverence in to a negative realm... now do you see ehsaas-e-mehroomi?
