Yes ... According to my calculations the exact middle of the month is 16/08/2008 03:05 UT

Luckily us lot in the UK do not have to adjust UT because we are on it. Tonight is the mid-shaban cross-over. Technically speaking those countries which move into Fajr before this time ... i.e. most of Asia including Saudi should do it tomorrow and US with the UK and a few other countries tonight, but luckily following Saudi will not be a mistake this time round for the UK.

APOLOGIES !!!

I need to modify my first statement ... the middle of the month is given from conjunction to conjunction which places the full moon to the middle, but this is not correct ... The correct middle of the month is from hilal first sighting to hilal first sighting. It is when the full moon is just beginning to wane. May Allah (SWT) forgive me. It seems the more correct day is actually tomorrow night for the UK!!!

The problem stems from Saudi who announce new months on an odd ruling. Even for UK if done on a local sighting basis we would be doing it on Sunday also, but because the Roy'a committee in the UK have agreed that we look to other country sightings too then we are more likely to do it earlier, but this depends on where the moon is in relation to the equator.

This time the moon is lower down which means we will get delayed sightings.

Just an important note however ... There is no fixed prayer prescribed for Middle of Shaban and most references are weak regarding the special prayers. However, it is recommended to pray optional prayer in the night, just the normal tahujjud and fast for 13th, 14th and 15th and every Monday and Thursday until end of Shaban then everyday for Ramadaan is a must.

So you can still fast tomorrow and day after too and day after that also ...
