Can petite girls wear a sari or will it just make the girl look smaller?
The girl in question is my cousin (who will be 22) and is about 5’0"- 5’1" (ft) weighing around 36-37kg (no curves). I’m just wondering because her birthday is coming up and I was thinking of getting her a sari (she’s never worn one before) but I’m unsure as to whether it will suit her given her size. She looks very doll-like in anarkhalis, frocks etc but I don’t know whether a sari is a big no no for girls that size?
Any suggestions, experiences? Are there any petite girls here who have worn a sari before?
I've seen a girl who was 4'11 and look great in a sari, although she was quite fit, however someone who is say, a bit stocky and short, perhaps it wouldn't be such a good look? Just IMO.
Yes, of course.. My SIL is only 5"1 and she looks stunning in a saree.. She's naturally v.slim anyway but uses those slim line petticoats underneath (I can't remember their name) rather than the flowy ones so the fit really compliments her figure..
Regarding the curves issue if it's up top u can always get a bit of padding sewn into ur blouse (my SIL does this as well) but imo slim girls do look gorgeous in sarees anyway...
Most of the time short girls have to cut the top of the sari a few inches to suit their height. I've seen it happen a lot because if you tuck in too much material at the top it just bulks up the sari so shorter girls tend to cut it a few inches and takes the width down. With that being said don't buy her super sheer sari that should have work around the top of the waistband area bc most likely that will be cut off at the tailor's. Or who knows maybe it won't mess up the design even if the work is gone, i'm not sure.
If a short girl doesn't cut it it's just a pain in the you know what to wrap them in a sari neatly, trust me I know. I was getting ready in a bridal suite with friends of the bride and a girl that's 4'11" was re-wrapped over and over because it kept coming out looking bulky due to the extra material we had to stuff in there. I wish she would have worn platforms. :)
The trick is fitting and how you wear them. If your blouse fits like a glove and you tie it correctly...it looks amazing no matter how short or tall the person is.
