... India went 'nuclear' in 1974 - it never flexed it's muscle or make Pak into a lake (as Abdali said). It took another 10 to 15 years for Pak to become nuclear - yet India never threatened it. ...
Maybe it was the Martians from Mars who've occupied Siachin Glacier since 1984.
Maybe Lebanon was invaded by aliens in 2006 from Saturn because Zion would never ever do that to a defenceless nation.
So why should Pakistan not spend on its own defense? Should we simply accept Indian Hegemony?
Remember Soviet Union?
I am sickened by this "increase in money" as there is no accountability in Pakistan and the army [captain and up now.. so sad] end up lining their pockets.
My bro's friend is in the army and he says now promotions are done with emphasis given to what "connections" you have the business interests in pakistan.
Again, there is no need too. We should all hope for peace, but to have peace, one must be prepared for war too. All Pak needs is minimum credible detrerence.
Economically, of course we cannot match India for GDP, its a silly question- India has 1.2 billion people, Pakistan has 160 million people. Its a different ball park, but we can match them for a per capita level, even pass it.
Pakistan is almost paranoid about getting even with India. This has lead to a disproportionate emphasis on defence spending.

Its obvious, that India doe not want to harm Pakistan. So, why let the Generals control Pak.
India is paranoid about Pakistan... You people cant fart in New Delhi without blaming it on the ISI... Pardon my french!
Its not Indias actions, its intentions that are of concern... Either stated or unstate.. Whether you like it or not, PAkistan does NOT trust India. Pakistan does not want to see India be the sole power in the region at its expense.
And its NOT obvious that India does not want to harm Pakistan. India HAS often undermined Pakistans intrests.
Just because YOU are Indian, and you trust your state unquestioningly, doesnt mean everyone else in the world would agree...
Perhaps, you being the big brother that you make yourselves out to be, should extend the olive branch. But looking at how India has been approaching the so called peace talks, it seems somewhat hallow.

Dude... Have you seen the state of the world today? As corrupt as the syatem is, Pakistan still needs its Army. For all its negatives, the Army fullfils a vital role which no other insititution could hope to fill...
This then is the quagmire that Pakistan finds itself.. It is held at the throat by its military, which itselfis vital for the countries survival.
India doesnt make anything easy, they have demonstrated hositility in the past and they have undermined Pakistan foreign and local intrests... Pehaos they conintue to do it to this day. But are we to accpet this?
Pakistan need genuine democracy... But we cant compramise on defense.

india is paranoid about pak with good reason. it has financed, trained and armed insurgencies in punjab, jammu and kashmir. pakistani terrorists of the state-sponsored JeM islamic group has hijacked indian airlines in the past. pakistan launched its masterpiece kargil sneak-attack right after a set of widely-hailed mutual confidence building measures. in short, pak isnt a trustworthy neighbour, and doesnt deserve any real trust. ask the afghans, and you will hear a their take on this with the same exact moral, but with a lot stronger language thrown in.

Save us you Sob story...
We can make all kinds of accusations... End point is this, that neither trusts the other, and thus, no need to lower defense spending. Happy?
Read your history... Im not going to go into a long debate over all that nonsense you posted... But its a two way street, India is no saint either, or should we assume you just accidently crossed into Siachen... Among the many other accidents that you have gotten yourselves into.
nonsense? it's the bitter truth, bud. you mentioned india is paranoid, i was merely giving you the reasons for it.
i am not recommending india up its military spending, india wouldnt have much trouble from pak's uber-politicized ultra-diversified unprofessional bandcamp of an army in any conventional war scenario.
trade and significant mutual economic dependence is the only thing that will bring lasting peace; and this hasnt happened despite 8 years of "peace". people to people contact is worthless when any goodwill generated is ruined in a fraction of a second at the call of a potbellied BJP leader or mullah's fiery sermon. goodwill doesnt speak peace the way trade dollars do.

Truth is relative buddy...And fact is that India is paranoid, and if you dont know the definition of Paranoia, I suggest you look it up... Its "Suspicion of others that is NOT based on fact."
Its good that you admit your paranoia. Admiting you have a problem is the first step in recovery. Ultimately though, if you want peace you will have to stop being neurotic, and actually pursue peace honestly.. Which is somehting India is obviously not interested in.
Your confidence is just a product of arrogance (misplaced arrogance I might add..).
Remember one thing, its India that would be on the attack, we simply have to sit tight and let you attack. Outside of reloading, I doubt we would have any problems from Indias oh so experienced Army hordes...
Besides, India has never had a comprehensive win, except in Balngaldesh although that has far less to do with your armies capability and far more to do with circumstance. And thats a fact...
... I never had much faith in people to people contact. Whats the point when India refuses to deal with the core issues. Perhaps its lack of motivation, or a lack of vision, but India isnt a very good partner in peace. So thus justifies our need for a strong military.
One-eyed policy poses danger to India
By Ramtanu Maitra
The present paralytic state of India’s foreign-policy making, and the nation’s inability to contribute in a meaningful way on the major issues that concern the security and peace of the world, is the result of a deliberate process that began with the advent of the V P Singh government in late 1980s. Since then, India has increasingly abandoned looking at the world independently, slowly but surely narrowing its foreign-policy sights.
What followed, however, was the spectacle of groveling at Washington’s feet. At the end of the 10 rounds of talks, projected in New Delhi as diplomacy, and after a loud endorsement of the war on terrorism, ** India’s entire foreign policy appears to be more tightly wrapped around Pakistan than ever. ** At the same time, the country’s domestic policy has strayed far from the path of removing abject poverty and building up the nation, hurtling down the path of least resistance into the abyss of exploitation of caste and Hindu-Muslim conflicts. Ayodhya, Babri Masjid, Ram Janambhoomi, Gujarat killings, Jammu and Kashmir … the list goes on.
Remember the Kashmir earthquake - India was ready to go out of its way, open borders, fly helicopters, provide assistance. But Pak Army choose not to grasp this 'olive branch' and continued on its merry ways.
India doe'nt want Azad Kashmir - It's Pakistan which wants Indian Kashmir?
Let's call it quits - you keep what you have & we keep what we have. (or freeze the issue for future generations to sort out)
Lets concentrate on trade, economy, education, health etc.
The Generals in Pak, would consider this a death knoll for their privaliges - thus civilians are needed to thrash out political problems.
here is World Bank report, this is in addition to the above attributes I posted.
Given the huge positive press that India has received in recent times, it is sobering to discover that India’s per capita income is just a shade higher than that of sub-Saharan Africa, and about one-sixth that of Latin America.
Equally surprising is that 35% of India’s population lives on less than $1 a day, which is comparable to Bangladesh’s 36% and much worse than Pakistan’s 17% and Sri Lanka’s 6%.
