One of the sunnahs of eating from a plate is to avoid eating directly from the center because there’s no barakah there. Pull the food towards you and eat that is closest to you.

that is sunnat i paraphrased. Why do you think it was like that? Because other people are eating from the same platter and when you pull the food from the center, you may get into someone else’s share of food, plus it unhygienic as you are dipping your fingers in the middle of everyone’s food.
