I think every situation is different so there will always be exceptions to the stereotype/generalization that guys and girls can never be just friends. I've seen guy/girl friendships....which are just that....a mutual friendship. And I've seen several relationships which start out as friendships and develop into something more either mutually or as a one-sided affair. But I have seen purely platonic friendships between the opposite genders as well. It can go either way.
