Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

Can a shi’a girl marry a sunni guy? what problems may arise between the guy and the girl prior to marriage and after marriage? How would parents react to this? How to convince them? What may the guy’s expectations be? Are there any benefits of inter-sect marriages? Do they go well? How would this be seen in Pakistan? Do societal influences harm the marriage? Please please please share your personal experiences if you have any!!

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

I have seen at least two such marriages in my family. In both cases the woman was sunni, and the man shia. I think understanding is needed from the parents as well as the bride/groom. In both cases the bride and groom have kept their sects, and the kids naturally follow the mother more.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

is it right to change one's sect for their husband/wife?

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

My hubbies best friend s a shia... ANd his wife is a sunny. It was a love marriage and the parents of the boys weren't happy in the beginning...but with time they have accepted the girl and the marriage.

The guy lets his wife free is her sect ...but he wasn't the strickt shia himself so it can be that things got easier for her cuz of that... But ma shaa allah both have a great understanding and respect towards the believes n sects

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

My mom's sunni and my dad's shia and no problems whatsoever but neither are particularly religious.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

the problem is when one or both become religious. the differences precipitate. it's hard to stick to their separate sects.

as far as the bride converting/adopting husband's sect is concerned, i would say that it's subjective and it depends on how religious the individuals are OR how seriously they take their sect.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

In have seen 3 such marriages in which girl is shia and guy is sunni. One worked fine for more than 40 years only the boys among their kids became sunni and the girl among their kids became Shia but both husband and wife in that couple were really educated and cultured people so they respected each other and were really tolerant.
In second case the Shia girl was constantly being taunted and scolded by her mother-in-law specially during muharram. In third such marriage girl adopted Sunni ways of worship etc. and stopped wearing black clothes during muharram and things worked well for this couple too.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

I know of one couple where girl is shia and guy is sunni. The girl was forced by MIL to give the kids sunni education and to adopt to sunni ways herself. The couple did have ongoing problems on this issue because both were fairly religious but it was a love marriage and they're together to date despite their differences. Their oldest kid is 18 I believe.

My cousin is about to get married to a Shia guy (we are Sunni). Its a love marriage, her mother is not happy at all, but her father just wants her to be happy. The guys parents are totally fine with this. They are quite strict about their practices, and the guy has told my cousin that she will have to adhere to their practices, especially during Muharram. But, he has not asked her to "convert". In Sha Allah, for both their sake, I hope it works out for them. May Allah bless their marriage with health, happiness, and Imaan, Ameen.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

That's a good way of doing things.. When my dadi passed away we went to a Shia mosque and stuff and observed the Shia practices for my dad's sake and no harm, no foul. If people just have an open mind about things it can work out. You don't need to convert in or out, just respect each other's point of views.

I would advise against it. Unless both guy and girl are not religious. Shia Sunni practices are rather different

My phupho (from extremely religious sunni family) married a Shia (very religious fam). They both eloped when phupho was 22 and uncle 30. Her family didn't talk to her until after 6 yrs when she had already had 3 kids. Now, 27 yrs later they're still going strong. Luckily, she didnt have a MIL or FIL and uncle was the oldest son so no one said anything bad to her but initially they did keep distance.
Both respect each other but except namaz, phupho does everything Shia way....no one forced her, I donno why she does that. All three kids are following Shia sect but one daughter just got engaged within our Sunni family and she says she'll become Sunni if her future husband will tell her too. I personally think phupho and her kids are confused as heck!! :(

It can be confusing when raising children and that's where I have seen the issues arrive. When it comes to inlaws, in my opinion, it should be between husband and wife to determine and decide how they wish to practice, whether its the guy or girl, I have usually seen one somewhat give up their practice and lean towards either more Sunni or more Shia. It depends on the couple. Outside interference is when things get really messy as in any case. Either way, like people have said there had to be an open mind, understanding and respect in order for these relationships to do well. It's not easy but it's not impossible, have a few successful marriages in my family. Practices differ during certain Islamic dates like Muharram, and a couple of other dates but generally that is when the difference is noticed from what I have seen. Everyday life is normal. As long as no one is being forced to adhere to a certain then things tend to work because most couples that marry out of love go into the relationship with that mutual understanding if their differences. It takes alot of patience forsure.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

I met a couple recently and later found out that the wife secretly converted from Sunni to Shia this year, but hasn't told her Sunni husband yet... I wonder how that's gonna turn out.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

Who cares when these days its the norm for a Muslim girl/boy to marry non-Muslims. (ignore the generalisation, just making a point)

Sunni/Shia is still better as both are Muslim.

Re: Can a Shi'a girl marry a Sunni guy? Do inter-sect marriages go well?

why is it always the MIL that has the problem?? you never hear the FIL have a hissyfit over some lack of subservience in their kids- not in the way that the MIL does.
