I m literally frustrated now. Moved here last year in October. Live in the The Woodlands & seems like everything I need is at least 30 miles away. Need recommendations for the following
Zabihah Halal grocery store where the meat is FRESH (doesn’t have that “humak”)
Regular desi grocery store where masalas are fresh or at least the merchandise keeps on rolling & is not dusty and if they have fresh mint (since its hard to find in the American grocery stores)
A good place for eyebrows threading, waxing & facials. They don’t have to be desi but reasonably priced & Pros (no matter what). Went to Aisha’s in Hillcroft & another branch, I don’t remember where it was. Loved the work. Hated the attitude :S Any other place?
A tailor who stitches desi clothes.
Besides Poshak how many Pakistani retail stores do we have in the Hillcroft area (not talking about grocery)
22 Karat gold jewelery store owned by Pakistanis
& last places that I should really check out since I am here maybe for a couple of months.
I'm not from Huston - but I went there about 3 years ago.
I did not like it at all because everything was soooooo far away. You are right it seems 30 miles to get anything. Without a car you are nothing! It's extremely hot and have to leave the AC on max!
I'm from London but got loads of family in Houston, there's this big estate type place, can't remember the name (something 'colony'??) in Sugarland. Never been anywhere sooooo hot and the grass looks a bit like plastic, it's the exact opposite and extreme of everything in the UK. Love the Galleria, seriously the best shopping mall I've ever seen and how cool is that ice rink on the bottom floor :)
u r in houston...me too, :)
i m on the SW side (thats where all the good desi stuff is).
i have a aunt living in woodlands, i will ask her where she goes for stuff.
there is one really nice clothing store on Highway 6 - next to the indian theater (really far frm where u r) but they have great stuff. mostly desinger stuff.
i also knw a lady who does great stitching but also on the SW side :( if u like i could give u her info.

Oh yeah I am not that big on the ice rink coz being a Chicagoan now I m sick & tired of anything that's snow or ice or cold. Hopefully when actual summer time c omes. Went to Galleria twice. Its near Sugarland. That's where everything desi is I guess. Problem is all this is just too far from where I live. Oh & yeah the hot weather I m honestly kinda loving it. Was born & raised in Dubai so used to extreme hotness.

Oh that is so cool. So how is Houston? Any places I should def. check out? :) Is highway 6 the Katy area? I went to this Indian theatre 2 weeks ago. We don't have 'em in Chicago so that was an experience. I am willing to drive for the stitching part. Basically need a good tailor who can take my size for lehnga, saaris & shalwar kameez. I really need to send my clothing size to my in laws in Pakistan. Would really appreciate it if you can get some more information from yr aunt for the Woodlands area.
Thanks a million :)
P.S what places in the S.W? Can u please name some places. Might convince my hubby to take me there.

Memorial city mall & Katy mall. I don't know where that is but I m sure its far :)
Bintenaeem, ive moved to houston from chicago recently as well.i drive so its pretty easy for me to get around esp.with a gps..and ive been exploring..i bet chicago is just much more of a happening place..btw i live by the desi shops-hillcroft area as well..and ive seen couple 22kt gold shops..
so far ive only eaten at sabri-llunch buffet and it was pretty good.also, the stuff at hot bread bakery is fresh and yummyy!!..iwish we had something like this in chicago...tahooora is only good for desi snacks and mithayi.
rabia, do you know a good restaurant (indian or paki)for pani puri etc and dosa on hillcroft???
Hey there Teeni! I drive as well as have a gps to help me around. See u r lucky u live by the desi places. I m like freakin 55 mins drive away from everything. Way up north. Weird thing is I m scared to drive in Houston. Is it me or the drivers here r just too aggressive. I used to drive a lot in Chicago. Here in 4 months I have driven only twice. No driver indicates before changing lanes or let me correct only 10 % do. Back in Chicago I could even differentiate between the unmarked police cars. That helped while speeding :) Here I dunno anything. Finally have gotten used to the whole feeder road part.
I checked out the gold stores yesterday. Will try Sabri & Hot bread next time I go there. Thanks.

I live around the SW part of houston as well. Right on 59 and hillcroft. Bismillah snack (chaat, paani puri, chai, sandwitches...etc), bismillah resturant, sabri , shainai resturant are some of the good places. Aqsa halah meat (opp. bismiallah) is a good halah meat place. Desi grocery (Patel bors, taaza market, gulshan-e-iqbal (all on Hilcroft) are some of the good stores to get desi veggies and things.....About driving....How cool are the U-turns....that was the coolest thing I liked about houston coming from Chicago/St. Louis and I also agree that drivers here are more aggresive than drivers in chicago.
Also, supercenter walmarts was the 2nd thing I liked about houston since there were none in Chicago at the time.
^ Lol about the Walmart us145. So true. Yeah I know the U turns are no doubt something different & I guess a time saver lol.
Thanks a zillion for the recommendations. You just cheered me up :) I am gonna try all these places & then pick out the best ones. U guys are all so lucky. Live right near all the halal food & other stuff.
I used to live very close to the Galleria - on the Sage.
For desi grocery, there used to be a store near Sheikh Chilli Restaurant which is on the left of the road after you pass under HW59 coming from Westheimer. Just before this crossing, there are a bunch of desi joints on the corner square next to Colorado's crucifix. We used to buy the meat from an Arab grocery store there.
Thats the Gulshan-e-Iqbal grocery store. Its being renovated right now. They just renovated Dilpasand Mithai. There are still some of the stores before 59 on hilcroft on the corner square . A new branch of Voss fish market (Voss Fish Market from Hwy 6 - The best desi style fish in town) had opened up in that same strip mall.
Wow More places. Cool. So I am assuming there is more than just Hillcroft?
Oh & by the way I went to Sabri the other day. It was different. All places here have buffet. That's is cool in a way so we get to try so many different things at once. Still have a lot of places to check out.
There sure is but most of the desi things are on Hillcroft. There is Savoy shopping center (Savoy grocery, Aisha parlor, Savoy resturant, Dont know the name of the cake shop but its among the best in town) Its on Wilcrest and bellfort on 59.
I only eat Sabri buffet when I m in the mood for paye. Best I have ever had since I have been in US. Also, the fish place I mentioned above is also the best in the 3 cities that I have been in (Chicago, St. Louis and Houston)

Oh Hot Breads I guess? Still have to try it. Wilcrest & Bellfort. I am gonna remember these names now. Voss? I wanna go try their fish now. Its usually hard to find really good fish & I am big seafood fan. Thanks again us1415 :)
I've my one mamu who moved to houston a couple of years back with family. They keep on tempting us to visit there and live due to two big reasons among several:
(a) Houses are cheap and huge as compared to what we have got here in NY alongwith less taxes
(b) Loads of desi stuff.. and yes but loadz I mean really a lot. God knows better.
So houstonians may correct these two points if they are wrong or give your input
