Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Please list an important makeup application tip you have picked up over the years.

It could be anything from how you put on eyeliner to what makes your face remain fresh for hours.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

  • Apply u're eyeliner with u're eyes open to achieve a neater and even line.

  • Set ALL u're make-up with translucent powder and a big/fluffy brush.

  • Use a concealer 2 shades lighter than u're complexion around the corners of u're nose and mouth. These area's are usually a little darker and this make u're face look 'even' colored.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

^^ Great tips Gina:k:!! I recently started to use a translucent powder of MAC and im so in love!! it doesnt make me look like i have layers of foundation before when i use to dust a coloured powder after the liquid i looked cakey…which translucent powder do you recommend? and a concealer too.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Learn to contour. It can make you look thinner and prettier. Everyone probably knows this one: with dark eye makeup keep your lips neutral, with darker/brighter lips keep your eye makeup simple. Don't forget about your eyebrows and hair, both help frame your face. Use a moisturizer before applying foundation. Always use an eyeshadow primer. That's it for now

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

What is a simple formula if one wants to learn how to contour the jawline and nose?

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

*I have a question too Gina.

When applying a concealer should it be on top of the foundation or below? and should it always be 2 shades lighter then ones complexion?*

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Gina, can you post a tutorial of your bridal makeup? pleaseeeee?

1 thing thing which should be obvious but I didnt really use before is to use a shimmery blush on the apples of the cheek to attain a very radiant, and youthful blushy look.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

^I had already started typing this typ and then I scrolled up and saw that you listed it, :hehe:. That’s exactly how I apply my eyeliner…with my eyes open. And I think it does make the application look better. I prefer a thin line as opposed to a thicker/fatter one just because it looks more natural and subtle…and I’ve received several compliments on my eyeliner.

Sometimes I use lip liner instead of lipstick to color my lips. I don’t know if this would be considered a tip…but I think it looks neater, more well defined, and makes your lips appear fuller…especially if you use a pinkish-brown or nude color.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Reha, you have to Practice and try different techniques when it comes to contouring. I have found a way to make my nose smaller using a contour technique I came up with. I dont know what your nose looks like so I can't tell you what will work for you. There's a makeup guru on YouTube that does makeup transformations. She is quite amazing. Look up dope2111 on YouTube. She is amazing with contouring.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Usually before, this way when you apply your foundation and powder it all is blended-well together. If you see dark area's even after your foundation application you may go over the area's again by gently patting-in a concealer on the area.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

i ve learnt alot concealing, contouring in right directions blush too, ooooo eye shadows speacially smokeyssssssss yeah and other styles i now love t play with colours as now i ve learnt how to blend them nicely, eye liner, false eye lashes in seconds yeah , hair styling , contact lenses finally which was such a painnnnnnnnnn!!!
BUT STILL LEARNING IT NEVER ENDS

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

So I have a question about this contouring business- what about us hijabis? I know you can contour the nose, but what else can you contour when wearing a hijaab? Any tips would be appreciated!

As from my side- I've learned to portion off my faces to put less makeup on. When using foundation, if you only need coverup at the bottom of the face- which is usually true for acne prone skin, then try only using it on the lower face and powder the whole face to give an even look. It gives an illusion of not having makeup on, but you wanna make sure you don't look two-toned. So well-matched foundation is a must!

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

What are you trying to contour Safoora, what kind of nose do you have? If it's a flat or broad nose then you use a shadow (2 shades darker than your complexion in matte) and apply it with the help of a small brush to the sides of your nose and blend really well. Apply a white shadow down the bridge of your nose.

You can apply the same shadow beneath your cheekbones right into the hollows (when you make a 'fish' face) to create an illusion of prominent cheek bones.

Take a bronzer and a tapered brush and apply some of it under your chin and jawline

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

^yeah, see that was what I was confused about. I don't think it matters much to contour the jawline when wearing a hijab because the fabric will do that for you, no?! I guess I should only do the nose, i'm okay with my cheekbones. thanks gina, you're a gem mA!

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

I used to believe that you can achieve a natural face makeup look when you use just 1 product on your skin. After a long time I realized that in order to give your face a natural look when wearing foundation, you need to use a few things, one product does not cut it. For people who have problematic skin like me, a natural (and concealing) look cannot be achieved with just one product. Our skin color varies on our faces without makeup, so naturally it should vary when applying makeup aswell. We're lighter, darker, pinker in certain areas therefore our makeup should be too.

This is my foundation routine:
-Liquid foundation stippled onto areas that need coverage, then blended all over my face.
-Powder applied with a flat brush to the entire face.
-Using a foundation powder that 3 shades darker than my skin, I lightly contour my cheeks ( a bit of bronzer, which is NOT overdone really finishes the look)
-Apply a light colored blush that compliments your skin tone onto the apples of your cheeks and blend it slightly with the bronzer.

This is not a foundation routine, but it's something that complete's the face makeup IMO, I always fill in my brows using a light brown eye shadow. Some people have thicker brows and don't need to, but for those of you who have light brows or brows that are not the same thickness overall should try filling in your brows. It frames the face very nicely, and once again "completes" the look. I make sure that each time i'm trying an eye makeup look and posting pictures, my brows are filled in because without it, the eyes just look incomplete. In order for your eye makeup to look good, you have to make sure your palette looks neat.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

^ I tried your method and my face now looks like a Bronze Age Statue. Help :P

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Makeup takes practice! You can watch someone do it a million times but if you don't make any attempts, you will not get it right. I still look like a churail with makeup and I am sure i need to keep practicing and keep trying different colors and see what makes me look better.

Not all of us are lucky enough to pull off every look.

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

*My makeup looks good otherwise - Its just the stupid foundation that makes my face look weird/powdery even when its the perfect shade and all and I use brands like makeup forever, mac, laura mercier etc yet i can't find the foundation thats perfect for my skin at times it looks its powdery even though my skin is oily at times it oxidizes and at times it doesn't cover as much. And those same foundations work wonders for others...don't know what to do. *

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

^ Have you tried Bobbi Brown products?

Re: Calling ALL GS Makeup Artists!

Same here! I have used many foundations such as MAC etc but nothing seem to look good on my skin..even though its the right colour but makes me look dull and gray and cakey!
