Call me by my name.

Sarah in that other thread pointed out how some people call their parents by their first name and all. Anyway, I wanna know what people think about calling your spouse by their name, not just in the household but also in public.

In my circle of Desi friends, anyone hardly ever calls their wife by their name. So when talking about why his wife didn’t come to the party, he will say ‘my wife had to do so and so’ and these women talk about their husbands like ‘meray miaN tou blah blah.’

Why not just say the name? If you are talking to a stranger who sat next to you on the bus, it would be a different thing but while talking to your co-worker or a neighbor, shouldn’t the spouse get a name?

Re: Call me by my name.

I rather say the name...u don't know which one is ur UNN in a gatherin...

Re: Call me by my name.

One of my friends always mentions his wife as ‘hamari biwi’, bilawajah dil khush ho jata hae hum ghareeboN ka bhi

Re: Call me by my name.

Re: Call me by my name.

hahaha

Re: Call me by my name.

Is that just desis who do that?

Re: Call me by my name.

yes its just desis who do that!

Re: Call me by my name.

no it is not just desis who say "my husband" or "my wife" or "my babies" everyone else does it too!
Come to think of it, my husband hardly ever calls me by my name :D haha! For people who don't know him by his name I say "my hubby/husband" but for people who know who he is, I say his name.

Re: Call me by my name.

How about the phenomena of altering the pronunciation of your name so that non-Desis can say it easily?

I had to do this all of my childhood. Then, during my teens, I realized my name wasn't very difficult to pronounce if non-Desi's actually cared about pronouncing it correctly. So now, when I introduce myself, I say my name the way that is actually pronounced.

Re: Call me by my name.

I actually only call him by his name around others. When we’re alone we use pet names.

Re: Call me by my name.

The worst offender is when someone is talking about his wife and referring to her as "aap ki bhabi". Once the story gets more than two sentences long, the "aap ki bhabi" bit starts to get really weird. Past fourth sentence, when there are multiple "bhabis" involved cooking different dishes and backbiting about other "bhabis", I usually give up as to who this dude is talking about.

Re: Call me by my name.

:rotfl: very true..

Re: Call me by my name.

their parents atah-fermaa-ed them a name for a freakin reason!

Re: Call me by my name.

So, I met this guy in Lahore and he goes "aap ki bhabi ne aaj nashtay mein omelette aur parathay banayay thay. Mein tau subha nashta karr ke phir sau giya".....

And I am thinking "hmmm, thats weird, cz I talked to my bhabi in the morning, and she didn't mention anything about omelette. And on top of it, she invited this bozo for breakfast, dayam!!!"

:D

Re: Call me by my name.

We call each other by our names in front of others. But once in a while he calls me by a term that highly bothers me just to get a kick out of it.

My parents are ok with each other's names in front of others mostly, but somehow they don't call each other by their names. They're so good at dodging it and still getting each other's attention. :D

Re: Call me by my name.

You mean the quintessential desi favorite "sunein zara..." ?

Re: Call me by my name.

one uncle discussing weekend plans made by his:

woh kehti hai…

Another:

oos ne friday ko batana ho ta hai…

How impersonal, how cold. :cringe:

Re: Call me by my name.

Yep! :D Or, a plain old "aap" before the actual question.

Re: Call me by my name.

we always use each others names in public places... but at home its a different story..

Re: Call me by my name.

hahah thats funny.. i actually call him by his name everywhere.. no matter if we r at the gathering or back at home... but i do know sumone who address her hubby by 'Aeyee'.. :D .. it sounds so cute... when she calls him and say *'Ayee app wapsee mayn dahee laytay huway aaye *ga' .. :D
