Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

@NaanGuard you’re up!

***“Top 3 favorite Pies?”

You know despite the username (it’s *PI *people… the mathematical constant not the dessert), I’m actually not a huge fan of pies! But for you meri pyari :flowers:…

  • Tarte tartin
  • Lemon squares (okay okay it’s not exactly a pie but it’s close! Besides there is something amazing about the marriage of buttery shortbread and tart lemon curd.)
  • Here in the US what they call a coconut cream pie is in fact an airy fairy impostor… an abomination! Back home in JA our coconut cream pie is a thick not overly sweet confection made with real coconuts, real cream and usually condensed milk. So that would be my final choice.

***“If you could rename your self what name would you pick?”

I don’t know but my mother always wanted me to have a Welsh name before Dad put the kibosh on it so probably something Welsh like Aisling or Eleri.

***How did you like the movie Half baked?

Well truth be told it’s not my favourite BUT when you consider the actual beginnings of the film (including conception) in that, just based on Chapelle’s pitch, it was approved without even a script, just further proves that he is a legend and a true comedic genius. Nuff said!

***Book recommendations?

You have to be more specific than that… I need a genre. Cookbooks? Look for Nigel Slater, Bittman, and Donna Hay. They’re perfect for beginners.

I read a lot but it’s hard for me to recommend something off the cuff without knowing you that well. How about a piece of advice instead? The next time you’re in a book store go for the thing you’d be least likely to pick up… you might be pleasantly surprised and even if you’re not, chances are you’ll glean something useful from it. If it’s been awhile since you picked up a biography grab Hillbilly Elegy. If you haven’t seen a science book since leaving Uni but you’ve read everything Neil Degresse Tyson has put out pick up Weismans The World Without Us or the supremely funny Stiff: The curious lives of human cadavers. Hmm what else… I don’t think men read enough female authors so let me recommend Susan Sontag. Looking for something just as cerebral but not as heavy? Try the wickedly funny Nora Ephron.

Anyway I’m just rambling.. what do I know… I’m currently reading a book about the history of honey.

“If you were a movie character which movie character are you most similar too?”

One character can’t define me. :snooty: It would have to be a hybrid/ cross between Eve in Only Lovers Left Alive, Catherine Banning in The Thomas Crown Affair, and Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice.

***“Favorite joke you tell someone?”

This is going to involve two photos… I’ll post my response either after dinner or tomorrow.

***“What options do you think would come up if you could “right-click” people?”

This is a truly fantastic question! One I’ll be thinking about long after I give my answer. The only worthwhile one of your bunch! :meeno: I’d either force them to listen thoroughly to the other sides of their argument before being able to respond (and by this I mean they’d have to prove they really comprehended what the opposing argument was stating) or in the case of vitriolic cyber trolls I’d force them to see the best parts of the lives of the people they attack… an hour or two of family vacations, birthdays, holidays etc so that they see the humanity behind the words on the screen before they were allowed to make another post tearing someone apart. Or I’d make it a start over feature… so you could do over situations and make a better impression on the people you meet. I’m typing this and cooking dinner so I have no idea if any of that made sense lol!

“How do you relate to Pakis?”

The same way I relate to anyone… I listen and empathize… unless you meant something else? Something more atavistic perhaps?

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

I have a few cross questions but let’s save them for tomorrow as it’s already 2 am here and i am super sleepy.. Good answers, by the way.

@aqua70 :wub:

***“******What is your career field?”

I studied risk management, asset protection and crisis and disaster management in school. I still consult but what I do now primarily is manage my investments.

***“What is your favorite childhood memory?”

I have soooo many great ones… but you’ll laugh at this one the most I think… betting on crab racing lol. I used to walk down to the docks after dark when the grown ups would race crabs and bet on favourites. I was a seriously naughty child. I’d have been my sons age at the time… but I was never in any danger… Jamaica was so safe back then.

There was one uncle who would always slip me sweeties and help me pick the winners.

***“When did you first learn to pick up on Urdu?”

Couple months ago? lol I’m terrible at it… but I’m working hard to get better!

***How many languages do you speak?

Welsh (though this is fading fast due to lack of use), I’m okay with French and of course English. I’m not counting Patois as it’s a b*stardized version of English. When I’m much much more competent, Urdu would be my fourth language and first non Latin one but there are many more I’d like to learn!

***“You went to university in UK right? Did you like living there?”

I did! In Leicester! I loved it… I’ve loved every place I’ve lived except two. Both were miserable and insular in their own ways. I still have lots of family in the U.K and I’m a British citizen among other things so I try and visit when I can.

***“How many countries have you visited?”

Not nearly enough… about 20 or so.

***“Winter or Summer?”

I suppose I can’t cheat and say Fall? Very well… Winter it is then since I was born in endless Summer.

***“What is the hardest part about being a parent?”

The drudgery of it at times particularly if you are a person who isn’t fully comforted by routines. The day in day out way it can wear you down. I have been sitting here trying to think of something profound but there it is… Also the guilt of sometimes looking at him and wondering about the Road Not Taken. And the pain you feel when they are in pain. When the boy was 3 years old he slipped (on New Years day) and broke his leg. Because of the day it was no specialists were available. We went to an ER and they put him in a very temp splint but he’d be in excruciating pain every time he was jostled or when he stirred in his sleep. By the second night (we had to wait three night to get an appointment with a Ped Ortho) I just sat there holding him (arms numb) while we both cried.

***What is the best part about being a parent?"

The way they constantly surprise you. Watching them go from blobs to actual people. Sometimes the little dude is so profound with the things he notices and says… and it’s really interesting when you see yourself in them. The boy has my giggle and sarcasm.

***“Which city/place is your favorite?”

I’m assuming you mean of places I’ve actually lived? (If you just mean generally let me know because I’ll give you a different answer!!) Usually the answer to this is wherever I currently am and I’m definitely having a massive love affair with Philly at the moment but I also really loved Toronto. It’s a wonderfully vibrant, diverse city (so is Philly)! I had a great time living there. Easily the cleanest of the big cities I’ve lived in. London was a lot of fun but I never liked the attitude.

***“How did you manage to stay genuine when this world is full of bitter people?”

At the risk of sounding like a Hallmark card, this life is beautiful. It is terrible, tragic even but also painfully beautiful. It is complicated and as empty or full as you make it. I’m endlessly fascinated by it and… I love people. I love meeting people. Talking to people. All sorts of people! Even people with “bad” ideas because it doesn’t always drive them to be bad people. If I let the brief negative encounters I have colour my perspective of this world I’d lose out on a lot. Our authenticity is a part of our legacy and that’s all we have in the end. I work hard to preserve it and I’m constantly checking myself, my thoughts, my actions.

***“When did you discover that you love to cook?”

I honestly can’t remember a time when food and our connection to it in general didn’t fascinate me. It’s always been a vital part of how I show love.

***“What is one talent you have that most people are surprised to know about?”

Does it have to be an actual talent? I write terrible poetry :rotfl:. That’s probably not surprising. I’m very good at setting people at ease… people trust me easily and tend to confide in me. I hold a fair amount of secrets for others and I don’t break promises.

“What is your greatest accomplishment?”

I’d like to think that this is yet to come. I don’t consider my son an achievement because he’s his own man. Perhaps the life I have built for us after my divorce? And my relationships with my family.

***“What is your favorite food?”

Easier to tell you what I don’t like! I’m not found of eggplant or karela.

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

Aww @FreshBakedPi loved all of your answers! The story of your son breaking his leg and waiting 3 days to get an actual cast, dang idk what to say. I can only imagine how painful it must have been for him and for you as well, waiting with him. I have to say though, you are an awesome mom! Also random, but I am jealous of all the places you have visited! Haha :hugz:

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

That is the best compliment I could ever receive! :hugz:

He argued with the nurse because he wanted the pink cast and she kept trying to show him the blue :hehe:… this was the day he got it removed:

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

@Illuminate :bulbuli:

***“Name one of your happiest moments”

Well I’ve already talked about my boy so I’ll give you another! Last year my middle sister discovered a large lump on her upper right thigh. It was warm to the touch (a very bad sign because that generally means a separate blood supply). The first diagnosis we received was a sarcoma (cancer.) We got a second opinion and proper biopsy and were told it was in fact a hibernoma (benign!!!) They removed it and she is well. I cannot begin to describe to you the relief I felt then and the gratitude I still feel now that I get to bother her and pick on her whenever I want.

***“Name an incident that has made you stronger or has changed your perspective of people or places.”

My divorce forced me to reevaluate what was important to me… what I wanted in life and ultimately in love. I needed time to immerse myself in that pain in order to get through it. I needed to mourn it (because it is in a way a death) and ultimately I needed to forgive. Him, myself… all of it. What I learned was that everything I need to get through this life, I already have. I learned bitterness only destroys you. I learned it’s more important than ever to trust and not close myself off from people or experiences.

***“Favourite travel destination”

As much as I enjoy new places, I think there’s nothing quite like going home so either Bermuda or Jamaica.

***“Name one guppie who you would like to meet in person.”

How about you!?! It would be fun to see Toronto (or anywhere else in Canada) through someone elses eyes! No seriously I’d love to meet all of you… any of you! Especially the resident anathemas who I thoroughly enjoy (ahem @Bobby1 and @IsaidwhatIsaid :mehr:) and curmudgeons (I’m looking at you @NaanGuard)

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

Aww he is adorable, his lashes though.

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

Why do the guys always get the lashes???!! It is completely unfair!

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

awww poor baby… :frowning:

going with the pink cast is so cute though

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

Exactly! Whyyy? My aunt’s brother’s son lol, (mouthful to say) when I first saw him, he was only a month old and had the most beautiful lashes I have ever seen, the kind that would give any girl with lash extensions run for their money. So not fair. Lol it’s always the guys that get them.

Re: Cafe interview Q&A : Fresh-Baked-Pie (Answers)

@Hakuna_Matata… I’m tired just looking at this list :aaho: lol

***“If I invite you to Pakistan, will you come??”

Of course… I’d planned to anyway! I mean you might have to be a bit patient because the proverbial you know what has hit the fan all over but.. absolutely.

***“If I kidnaps you.. how will you convince me to let you go??”

:rotfl:Hakuna is this related to the first question?! :nahi: Not exactly inspiring confidence here…:stuck_out_tongue: I don’t think it would take much convincing as you are too kind to treat a guest poorly. I’d promise to make you lots of good things to eat!

***“You wake up bald next day, how will you react and what will you do??”

I’d likely panic initially (I mean that’s a jarring way to wake up no!? ), call my sister (not mum because no sense in stressing her out), and then immediately set up an appointment with a GP to get a referral.

***Do you like Hi-Fi sound systems??

Of course!! I had sonos installed throughout my house. I still have a few rooms left to cover but the main areas and my master bedroom and bathroom are done. Sometimes when my youngest sister comes to visit I wake her up with German folk music :hoonh:… she gets SO mad :phati:

***“What are your views about Pakistanis??”

Oh good lord!!! Okay I’m going to take a crack at this but please keep in mind it’s late and I can’t guarantee any of this is going to make sense…

I think they’re just like everyone else in the world in that they want a good life for themselves and their families. They want a government they can trust in and access to the things that will help them achieve that better life. They must be careful not to allow the country to become an echo chamber of corruption and bad ideas. They must continue to evolve in order for the country to take it’s place among the progressive nations of the world. Above all, more focus is needed across the board from the government right on down to the layman on the rights, welfare, safety, and education of children and women in particular. Jobs and prosperity must be within reach for the common man, particularly the younger generation as an idle youth becomes “enslaved to everything” and a menace to progress or they simply leave and such brain drains have crippled nations (it did in Jamaica in the 70’s.) There is such amazing potential there… and I hope people don’t lose sight of it amidst the truly inconsequential (gasp Mahira Khan smoking or flashing some skin.) There are bigger, more systemic fish to fry.

“Which is easier to you, laptop, computer or mobile??”

My phone is always with me but I prefer my laptop.

***“If you likes a song, how many times you listen to it on repeat??”

Until I become sick of it… but that usually takes a very long time and before that happens, I tend to start liking a different tune.

***“Why do you think people are becoming more impatient, aggressive, violent, selfish & mean??”

Lack of opportunity, real life connections, and general feelings of helplessness.

***“What steps should be taken to make people kind, patient, loving and polite??”

I’d say this is probably a personal journey and slightly different for everyone but I imagine that healthy doses of gratitude, compassion, and some of the things I mentioned above would help.

***“Which type are you??”

Of person? Ever evolving hopefully.

***“Have you ever been violent??”

I’m a pacifist by nature but regrettably I have had to defend myself a number of times. I can almost always talk my way out of situations.

***“Do you think we can judge people more than 50% on a forum about their personality, character, mindset and life??”

I don’t think we can ever know the true inner nature of someone… even the people we are closest to. But that shouldn’t inspire wariness or fear… instead curiosity and interest!

***“In exactly what mood do you wakes up??”

:e6: … just kidding lol. There is nothing exact about mood! But generally I wake up ready to face my day. I’d say resolved… not upset, not particularly pleased but ready.

***“Name one desi song you like most??”

I don’t have any favourites because I like so many… this is what I am currently loving and listening to: CLICK

***“Have you ever worn a “SaRee”??”

I have and I am convinced that women with more curves carry them off better than someone with my body type… which is true of most clothing I think.

***“What makes you most upset/worried??”

I’m a mother so naturally I worry about my boy but what I find most troubling is the general lack of compassion these days. They’d rather yell their point incessantly than listen, carefully consider, etc. Things must be spoken about absolutely (after all sunlight is the best disinfectant) but we have so woefully lost our manners. Arguments quickly devolve into personal insults back and forth and the ideas, the greater point gets lost. And then beyond that the same things everyone else worries about I imagine… the health of the planet, family’s well-being, what horrible set of horse pills my mother is going to send me next, etc.

***“What do you think about me?? Any suggestion for me??”

I think you’re lovely! Open, friendly, and kind. My advice to you is to not lose yourself in your friendships. You don’t have to hold the centre to protect the balance and you are not responsible for the happiness of others. Your convictions, your passions, they are just as important as everyone elses. Don’t allow yourself to be drowned out by others. By that same token, embrace plurality… learn why people hold opinions so different than yours. Really listen to counter arguments and question the world around you.

And travel more. Leave Pakistan for awhile. Learn things. Do things that make you marginally uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to fail.

***“Do you like to stick around friends, what about parties??”

I like both… I like my solitude (something you come to cherish as a parent) and I like to be with people. Both feed my soul in different ways. I’m just at ease in an empty house as I am in a crowd. I’m pretty gregarious so I don’t need to stick with friends at parties. I have a habit of striking up conversations with strangers… or they strike them up with me! I know I know this makes me completely besharam.

***“Why do you think people join forums??”

For a sense of connection and to blow off steam I imagine.

***“What’s the best thing you like about Pakistan??”

How can you not fall in love with a country that fought so hard to exist? It’s also one of the most beautiful places on earth I think. I’m quite ensorcelled.

***“Which desi food you ate last time?? if not then, wish to??”

Naat yakkhn. I forgot to take a picture of it for the cooking thread. It is so unbelievably difficult to find good sources of mawal here! Any way I recently found one and was so thrilled I bought a ridiculous amount!

***“What gift did you receive last time??”

Hmmmmm :hmmm: oh! My sister bought me a set of earrings! Would you like to see them?

***“What was the reason that made you angry last time??”

Oh Charlie hands down. Today he earned the nickname Torquemada for what he did to his favourite Blue Whale Stuffy that is sadly no more. :disgust:

***“What one thing you want to change about your life??”

I should probably work on my road rage… just kidding sorta lol… let’s see… I’m always working on being a better mother, a better sister, a better daughter, a better friend. It’s probably time for me to put myself back out there in terms of finding a spouse. I’d like to scale back on work and volunteer my time more than I currently do.

***“How are your handicraft & drawing skills??”

I’m actually ridiculously handy and crafty!! Will you permit me the ability to brag for just this once??! These are my favourite favours I ever made for the boys birthday party. It was a Peter Pan / Neverland theme:

These were for his third birthday. He’s eight now so these types of elaborate parties are a thing of the past (“uh mum… that’s not what’s cool now”) but… good memories. :hinna:

:mudhosh: <— this is how I feel after answering all your questions at this hour of the night :meeno:

Cutting it off here. I’ll try and finish more tomorrow. Good night All!

It’s amazing how resilient they are eh?!

And those extensions don’t come cheap!! My wax salon just started offering them and I almost fainted when I saw the price sheet… all that money for something so small!
