Buttermilk

What would you use buttermilk for?

Do you guys use it in any of your cooking/recipes?

Re: Buttermilk

I just drink it

Re: Buttermilk

Yes X2...apart from that. :D

I use it when making pancakes....or sometimes i add some when making mashed potatoes. Just want to know how other people use it in their cooking....

Re: Buttermilk

THIS IS DELICIOUS! I’ve made it a few times now (I didn’t have lemon extract; it was fine without it). It fills two loaf pans:

Buttermilk Pound Cake II - All Recipes

Ingredients

* 3 cups all-purpose flour
* 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup butter
* 3 cups white sugar
* 6 eggs
* 1 teaspoon lemon extract
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1 cup buttermilk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease one 9 or 10 inch tube pan. Mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat butter with sugar. Mix in the eggs, one at time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the lemon and the vanilla extracts. Gently mix in flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 90 minutes. Do not open oven door until after one hour. When cake begins to pull away from the side of the pan it is done. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Mmmmm. I’m going to go have some now with a cup of tea. :chai:

Re: Buttermilk

Sahar! :hayaa:

Is the sponge quite moist in the end, or is it dry?

Re: Buttermilk

pancakes, marinating chicken - esp for frying, in fruit smoothies when i don't want it as thick as yogurt makes it, in cold borscht!

Re: Buttermilk

I haven't found it particularly dry, but a few of the reviewers did and added sour cream. You could try that!

Re: Buttermilk

Sahar, if the recipe is for 2 loaf pans, then i’ll make one with sour cream and one without and see how it turns out. Thanks! :smiley:

Queer, cold borscht? Yech! I prefer it hot… :yummy:

Re: Buttermilk

I use it for baking cakes, or for fried chicken.

Re: Buttermilk

I have heard of it being used in Karrhi instead of yogurt.

Re: Buttermilk

Re: Buttermilk

Ok,guys,you all keep saying you use this for fried chicken.But...how do you use it please????.Do you soak the chook in it first or what?

Re: Buttermilk

Maroush I use it to make naan dough as it makes soft naans ...

I marinated chicken pieces in buttermilk overnight.

Re: Buttermilk

I marinated chicken in butter milk. After that, I seasoned it. For coating, i beat the egg and mixed in butter milk. for second coat, i used plain flour in resealable bag. It turned out the best fried chicken i had ever made.
