Sad day. But I hope our cricket moves on from this. Effects are certainly not as hard hitting as they were when this issue broke initially.

Guys any guess who was the source of Mazher Mahmood?
my wild guess- Afridi
That will be doing Pak cricket a huge favor and service.....Thus it rules out any possibility of Afridi doing it

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
It seemed that Pakistani cricketers thought that they were above the law and untouchable however this case would have been a rude awakening for them.
It seems that, it is not just the cricket players involved but some high ranking PCB officials as well in corruption. The corrupt players enjoy the patronage of PCB officials and other powerful people.
There is talk about fighting the verdict, that the verdict is wrong and that it may get overturned. However the reality is that British legal system is very different from the Pakistani legal system. Having lost the case it would be extremely difficult to challenge it under the British legal system.
So these players are going to be locked up for a fairly long time.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
A lot of new information here.
It’s depressing to think about how many other games could have been manipulated by these people.
What’s the next step? The players are getting the punishment they deserve.
What about these bookies all over the world UK Dubai India and Pakistan? Are agencies going to go after them? It’s the bookies that are the roots of this nonsense.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Our guys did that throughout the summer to the country, to the followers of cricket in that country that gave Pakistan cricket a shelter during the circumstances when NO ONE was willing to provide Pak a good reliable home conducive of providing good quality cricket on regular basis. If someone is going to come up with venue names like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, then I politely suggest that you try to first learn about the term "good quality cricket "
I have heard argues from some folks that tie Eng’s hosting Pak with $$ but i believe that even if $$ alone were the reason Eng hosted us then still we should not forget that we were country where a terrorist attack happened on another team and WE needed cricket.
that alone is a reason good enough for me to wish that NO ONE who was involved in any shenanigans from Eng tour and past should ever be allowed to Play for Pak again…EVER. I do not eve care if it happens to be the most talented player we have seen in ages.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
It took a foreign newspaper to bring justice...I find it hard to believe that it is a 'news' for the remaining cricket boards and cricketers. This game got filthy long time ago..these 3 just got caught.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
This was big news, even here. For the first time in NPS (National Public Radio) I heard cricket news today as I was returning from lunch. These players, as some have pointed out, just happened to be caught. There are probably crooks at higher places all over the cricketing world. But the little guy always pays the price. I hope sentencing is light - 6 months would be appropriate.
The New York Times article had the usual West - gentlemanly, East opposite message by associating gentlemanly to the West (implicitly) and bare-knuckle (read low class) to India and Pakistan.
"Many in the cricket world have warned that the syndicates and their grip on key players could destroy a game that has grown in recent decades from a gentlemanly, tradition-bound game played in impeccable white uniforms to a bare-knuckle, big-money sport centered in India and Pakistan, where matches are played in front of crowds exceeding 100,000 and tens of millions on television.
It is alarming to me that in Wall Street, only Rajaratnam and Gupta are being prosecuted for the ills of Wall Street, and now only players from the sub-continent. Hope some sort of balance prevails, and the players are given a rap on the knuckle.

Whats wrong with you uncle? why should it be light?

I believe in second chances :). Also I think we should attack the root cause, and go all the way to the top. I just feel these guys are the fall guys. (I know, I am not being logical - I just hate the thought of cricketeers spending a long time in jail for a non-violent crime)

I hope the sentencing is not light and they get what they deserve and hopefully we sill also shortly see Kamran Akmal getting the same treatment. They cannot be forgiven for what they have done to Pak cricket in specific and cricket in general. how pathetic and low life these idiots are. Khus kum jahan Pak. 7 years for all three.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
i'm speechless to say the least ..... It's way too much to still entertain ideas of conspiracy ...... For those who call for investigation of other Test-Playing nations i ask we should care about our Cricket and that for me is Pakistan Cricket Team ...... Even if there are any wrong doing going on by other nations cricketers i couldn't care less coz my heart bleeds to see how PPL me & u all admired sold themself for quick buck and yet are "bay-gharait" enough to still claim innocence
If there are still any voices about being trapped pray tell me how the messages were typed into their mobiles ??? how the money found it's way into their coffers ???
Now put in Inzi's, Yousaf's, Younis's and Afridi's captaincy in context and u realise how it must 've been
It also show that this Haidar guy claims were partly true even though he made an idiot of himself by doing this drama
For those who still hope (me included) Amir gets a suspended sentance guess even he shouldn't be spared ..... he is not greater than the Nation and Team he represented ..... there is a god given abundance of Talent in this Country ..... afterall it gave the world PPL like Fazal, Kardar, Hanif, Imran, Majid, Zaheer, Miandad, Inzi, Wasim, Waqar, Yousaf and the list goes on
I hope they r done for good this time and never dare to don the Pakistan colours again (Same goes for Akmal Brothers)
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I understand your sentiments brother. I feel the same. But I dont think Umar Akmal deserves to be bracketed with these losers.

Butt has proved that while his batting skills were absolutely pathetic his betting skills were absolutely brilliant. At least the AH loser is good at something.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Kamran Akmal should be investigated for the Sydney test im saying something was wrong in that test
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I dont understand why Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif even bothered with a defense. The accusations and proof were all recorded, not hearsay or circumstantial. Their guilty verdicts were almost set in stone. They should have spared themselves and Pakistan, the humiliation, and avoided the trials altogether. They would have been sentenced in absentia anyway, but at least the public humiliation would not have been there.

Sentencing process begins for guilty players
Richard Sydenham at Southwark Crown Court

The sentencing process in the spot-fixing trial has begun with all three players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir - together in the dock for the first time at the Southwark Crown Court in London. Butt and Asif were convicted on Tuesday on charges of conspiracy to cheat and of conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments; Amir had pleaded guilty to those charges in September, before the trial began.
The convictions for Asif and Butt - reached by the jury after 16 hours and 56 minutes of debate - carry jail terms: a maximum prison sentence for the acceptance of corrupt payments is seven years in jail, while ‘conspiracy to cheat’ carries a maximum two-year sentence.
Amir will now be given a “Newton Hearing” at which Justice Cooke, without the presence of a jury, will determine his level of punishment. The jury has, however, been given permission to sit in and watch if they wish. He is also likely to be cross-examined by the prosecution.
The spot-fixing case focussed on the Lord’s Test in August 2010, when Butt and Asif conspired with agent Mazhar Majeed, Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-determined no-balls during England’s innings. They were exposed by the now defunct British tabloid the News of the World in an undercover sting operation. Majeed was filmed revealing when no-balls would be delivered by the bowlers, footage which was played to the jury early in the trial.
