There seems to be selective memory about selective nitpicking here. There hasn't been a president attacked by the opposition party in history as what the Republicans did to Clinton. This president, for all his mistakes, deceptions and failures, is getting a relatively free passs. If Clinton was Teflon this guy is Crisco. There has never been a more divisive force than the Republican party during the Clinton years. Oh, except the Republican party of today.
I just think it is disingenuous to be flailing about talking about facist states when the evidence is that in each case, there was a connection to Al Qaedda. Kaleem is absolutely right, that the Echelon program was probably the single biggest communications interception program ever, pushing us much farther down the slippery slope, and it was enacted, you guessed it, under Clinton. Echelon is a vitual vacuum, pulling in long distance, cell phones, commercial transmissions and internet communications. Big brother truely got big with this program. Do you think they have never scooped up transmissions from a US citizen? Yeah, right.
Comparatively a few wiretaps on suspected US national terrorist targets does not twist my wires at all. What's more, Bush has far more reason that Clinton and Carter to aggressively pursue foreign threats by virtue of 9/11. The threat is higher. When Clinton was confronted with a common spy, Aldrich Ames, he did precisely the same thing, he authorized a warrentless search.
I really don't care about who is better at flinging poo, and whether it sticks. But when the NYTimes publishes a front page article and FORGETS to mention that previous Presidents claimed similar rights and executed similar actions, it reeks of an agenda.
OG, if a sober person going the speed limit hits someone who runs out into the middle of the street and a drunk driver going 90 hits a person crossing at a crosswalk it's a similar situation as a person in both cases got hit by a car. But in one case the drive broke the law and the other the drive did not break the law.
The cases of Clinton/Carter vs the current Bush case are as similar as the two drivers above.
