Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
And for the record, I think in a week we will all be amazed at the enormous effort taking place. Despite a really slow start, I think things will ramp up to an amazing capacity. In a week there will be a very different view.

Verizon, I think your eldest just bashed the little one’s head. You might wanna take a looky.

I wonder what this thread will look like once the mods clean it up.:D
Kala kaleem (pun intended): Hats off to you my brutha for your generous help. Keep up the good work.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
Ohioguy, I'm sure the clean up process will be much more efficient from now. That's because the media has been covering it and showing how miserable everyone is over there and how much like a 3rd world country the situation is similar to.
That's why Bush jee is sitting there now giving a telly address from NO areas...NOW, after like a week nearly.
Sure, there will be rebuilding and clean-up and saving of lives etc etc. But that wont wipe away the knowledge that these people have now that when they should have been taken care of right away, they didn't get the quality care they deserved.
Like I said, if they were white, what you see today, would have happened the day after the Hurricane hit.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
This has nothing to do with Jesse Jackson. I will tell you about on of the best quotes I heard about racial disparities in America and how gov’t should deal with it. You tell me who said it.. It was said by a Mayor of NY after a large scale power failure"…in my city, the citizens are like my children…they are all the same but at times like these some of them need a little more attention"
I don;t care if they are black or white (tee hee Michael Jackson circa 1987) but if a community needs greater attention because of impending doom, you don’t wash your hands with it and say, oh nothing could have been done, when something could have been done. This is Un-American. This is what happened in NO. This happened with a president doing a fly by. This happened with not special attention given immediately to areas where the citizens of the city needed a little more help than others. that is the tragedy. In times of calamaitous situation, you can either rise to the occasion (be an American) or pretend it is not happening (Eurotrash). Our president became french.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
No, the media covers the obvious. I don't think that they spent a lot of time looking at huge stocks of supplies and people organizing at rallying points, as it is not dramatic, and it is not compelling. I have been watching all morning, and there is convoy after convoy coming into the city. That takes more than a day to organize and move. They have to bring thier own supplies, and be self sufficient, or they become part of the problem. There are fire trucks arriving from Los Angeles!
The short term plan stunk, they did not respond fast enough or strong enough, but I think phase two is a lot better.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
Of course there will be a massive effort after all the criticism. The way to make amends is to double up. You can bet the effort will be huge but its too little too late for many don’t you think? I mean, the only memory of the folks that have had to endure 4 days of hell will be they recieved no help when they needed it most. The whole planning (or thereof the lack of it) of the relief effort was fundamentally flawed from the start. That won’t be forgotten so easily.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
here is media coverage. enjoy OG
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
It takes days to mobilize? They weren't preparing to mobilize when that hurricane was offshore and people knew that NO can't cope with a category 5. If they prepared to mobilize right before the hurricane hit, that would give them the few days they would need, and disaster could have been minimized.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
I think if the city had stayed dry things would have been much different. When the levy broke, no amount of planning would have been enough. Initially the levys held. But caring for a city of 700k with no power, no water, no communications, no sewers, no trash, ruined roads and bridges and dwindling food is a task beyond the comprehension. Never mind Miss. and Alabama.
I lived through Hurricane Bob in little Rhode Island in 1991, a category 2 storm. Rhode Island is only 45 miles wide, and it took three days for our National Guard to arrive. It was not until power crews from Canada and Maine arrived that we got power back 5 days later. Been there done that....
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
RI is also not a commonly hit area;
it took them 2 daysto send a SUFFICIENT NG forve, whereas in NO?;
NO is also not below sea level.
Also Katrina was category 5.
You can't possibly compare.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
My point is that even in a much smaller storm, in a much smaller area things were not instantaneous. And, RI gets hit every decade or so....
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
No, OG wants to compare the north east to the bayou. He wants to compare impact of degrees between categories of storms, he wants to compare Boston to NO. He wants to compare sea levels. Unfortunately he doesn't want to compare plight of American citizens to that of those in Thailand all in a span of 8 months. You see, they deserved it and according to OG the federal gov't, more so, the Bush administration is just as capable as the Thai gov't in taking care of it's citizens. Isn't that right, OG? Bush adminstration runs a fking third world country. Give it a rest dude!!

Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
^ yup..still no asnwers from OG. Did you see the link about the AP quotes OG. How does that make you feel?
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
OG, you seem to believe that this Hurricane caught everyone off guard, it wasn’t an earthquake, there were days of notice that a massive storm unlike we have seen was going to hit and years of warning that N.O. could have the dreaded ‘bowl effect’, what happen? Bush continued with his vacation, how can you excuse that? What’s going on isn’t hindsight, it was talked about for years before it occured (and funds were cut) and it was talked about days before it occurred, in no way is this criticism “hindsight”.
Will the relief effort end up being the most funded and man powered effort in modern U.S. history, yes but that in no way excuses this deplorable response that has occurred.
MS that lesson was know, FEMA had something called “Project Impact” It’s a program that is designed to prepare for such disasters before they occur, the Clinton administration created it and under Bush it was canceled.
Re: Bush administration forced cuts in flood protection in N.O. ($ went to Iraq)
bitching over who is at fault is not really helpful here.... but its fun. here is my blame list in the order.
