Burqa and Niqab

I’m not talkign about the new colorful Calvin Klein wear or hijabs, etc.

I’m talking about long black cloaks. And the type that cover your face.

Do you feel that as a woman, you can portray your personality easily to society wearing such an outfit?

Or is it easier to do when you have more flexibility with colors and styles and maybe a hijab-over non-cloaked dressing style (ex. Hijab on a long dress, or a hijab on a business suit)?

Re: Burqa and Niqab

there's an underlying premise in your statement that, portraying your personality to the society is important for a woman.

That statement alone is arguable and refutable.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

As you used the singular "woman," as a woman I will attest that my personality is very important.
It's what separates who I am from my cup size.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

I thought it was what was inside that counts?

Anyways, its a futile post. Regardless its Black or Green, as long as it's under Shariah, its permissible and allowed for women to explore.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

A young American kid visiting India - saw all the cows & buffaloes walking on the streets and screamed 'cows' 'cows' in her funny western drool - much to our delight & amusement.

While passing old Delhi where a few Burqa clad ladies was seen - suddenly the kid screamed 'witch' witch'. We were all shocked and tried explaining to the kid that witches are different - their hat is pointed and they carry a flying broom.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

The effort should be put in portraying the inner personality to the society. Some women will wear the cloak or hijab but their actions , gestures and mannerism will be cheap and everybody will identify them for what they are.
Others even if they are not in a cloak/burqa or hijab but their actions , gestures and mannerism will make you respect them.

So whatever you are wearing does not matter , your actions , gestures and mannerism will determine how your are being perceived by the society.

Yes modesty and proper dress is important , no Muslim person will respect a Muslima in flashy or revealing clothes.
They might respect a non Muslim woman in flashy and revealing clothes because of the cultural background these women come from .
Perverts are an exception they just look at a woman as their toy not as a person.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

Do people really know what "niqab" and "burqa" are really for?

Re: Burqa and Niqab

I am interested in your take on it. What do you think they are really for ?

Re: Burqa and Niqab

If those witches had a broom, you would gotten your A$$ whipped.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

100% agree.
I also think niqab/hijab goes by the society behave towards women. In west not wearing tight fittings would send a clear msg to men that , girl wants respect. And she doesn't want to present her self as sex object.

How ever in pakistan things could little different. Some time the best amusement men get ,in all day, looking women in burqa. Thats the most of opposite sex , they could get.
Don't believe me. Try walking in burqa on bus stations, train stations.

Usually women from moderate families use chader, and in areas when heat(men staring ) is un bearable. women cover their faces too.
I am talking about almost every city with exception of 2-3 biggest cities.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

first of all, its Naqab, not Niqab. Second of all, its not needed.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

Dude, are you really trying to correct a transliteration?

FYI, transliterations are phonetically based. Hence, your perception of it can and will differ from others.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

Depends upon the type of personality and what exactly she wants to portray.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

Did I say if it was "needed" or not? :)

Re: Burqa and Niqab

IMO niqab (or naqab for Robert) and pardah are to protect women's identity in public, to keep them safe from straying eyes. If you wear a burqa/naqab then it means you want to hide your identity, not want to attract/invite straying eyes. But if you wear "fashionable" niqab/burqa then you are killing one of the purposes of it.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

I find it amusing that in a thread specifically asking women about their opinions on purdah, the majority of responses are (of course) from men.

Re: Burqa and Niqab

We all know that one of the many reasons for a burqa is to keep away prying eyes. I'm not discussing that here. I'm discussing a woman's personality and how it gets affected by the aforementioned clothing forms.

When a woman with maybe a hijab or decently fitting clothing walks by, you might get some impression of her personality by the way she carries herself, her facial expressions when she speaks, etc. When a person, man or woman, means business, you darn well know it. When your boss comes up to you, male or female, and is peeved off, you darn well know it.

How is this different for a woman from head to toe in specifically a black cloak with a niqab (naqab) wrapped around her face?

Re: Burqa and Niqab

Portraying of personality....hmm...are you suggesting fashion is truly an individual, and not communal, compulsion...err...I mean mode of expression?

Re: Burqa and Niqab

LOL Nice one!

Re: Burqa and Niqab

Niqab is kinda anti-social.
