Thought I’d share and get a few pointers, if I’m missing some, this will mainly be used for intensive gfx editing and video editing and general stuff including games here and there.
Here are the specs of what I’m getting:
Mobo:
Gigabyte PC35-DS3R
DDR2 + DDR3 ready, up to 8gb support
Bluray-HD audio output
Cap 1333 FSB
Looks like a well rounded PC. My two pennies worth would be saving a few quid on RAM, something like GeIL will be as good as if not better than Ballastix and cost less. In the UK GeIL along with OCZ Platinum going rather cheap.
For VDU work stay away from the Acer. It appears to be a TN panel (5Ms) probably. Panels with PVA or similar offerings from AU Optronics (IPS from memory) will give much richer, more accurate colours. TN panels are ok for gaming but lack in every other respect where colour range, accuracy and viewing angles are concerned. I would be very tempted to go with the DELL 2407WFP-HC. This revision adds better CCFL = covers 92% of NTSC gamut. The other benefit being support for component so takes input from consoles and other electronics.
The specs for the motherboard are very good. However I have a inherit hate for Asus and Gigabyte laltely. I am someone who will tweak and prod with systems until they do exactly what I want. Asus and Gigabyte both use American Megatrends BIOS. It's GHAY. Really annoying, does weird stuff quite often. Phoenix on the other hand very good but charge more for licensing. As far as I know only Abit using Phoenix. They make very good motherboards too. They have decent P35 offerings.
Yeah I am waiting for year end to get em, its cheaper.
Acer 24" is not the most optimal choice, HOWEVER, i got it for $200 brand new.. so i think i hit a good deal, considering its going for $499.
Yeah, I was going for the ASUS, i love ASUS boards, but i want my mobo to be ddr3 ready once that becomes the standard. the asus one was a bit heavy on the wallet
The reason im going for crucial is because they manufacture their own board and chipset, and put it together under one facility, so its cheaper for them, and cheaper for the consumer.
OCZ uses third party, and i do agree they are cheap, but im going for a 1066, if i were to tone it down to 800, i wuda def gotten their sets.
I'd suggest you the same. There is no better.
And yea have your comp to 3 Gigs of Ram. 2 Gig with Windows Vista...I wouldnt be so sure. Especially If you plan to use It for the next 2 years without any upgrades then.
^ As far as I know Alienware are one of the best gamer notebooks, but 4k sounds pretty much even for a gamer model. Dell has had some for 2k and they are pretty awesome too.
I wouldn't say the same about the ASUS in my computer. Kindly donated to me by a relative. It's crap. Was am expensive board at the time too. I also tend to end up repairing PC's for friends and families. Believe me ASUS are no angels on quality. Yes they can market themselves, get products out earlier but not perfect. I would rather have a decent Abit any time. The bloody manuals ASUS provide are not worth the paper.

Well I'm using P4E Deluxe Board and I had no problems and before that never had problems with my previous Asus either. Where Intel, Abit, MSI, SIS made me cry at times these boards had never disappointed me thus far.
