BRUNEI: The first part of a law which calls for homosexuals to be stoned to death will be phased in by Hassanal Bolkiah - the Sultan of Brunei - today.
The law, which has been condemed by the UN and celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, Stephen Fry and Sharon Osbourne, who chose to boycott the Sultan’s hotel chain The Dorchester Group, will be phased in over a two-year period.
Entitled Sharia-law, the law operates in three phases with the initial phase seeing an increase in fines and prison sentences for various crimes, the Brunei Times reports.
Amputations come under the second phase and the third phase includes stoning for crimes including adultery and homosexual acts.
News agency AFP has quoted the Sultan as stating:
“Today… I place my faith in and am grateful to Allah the almighty to announce that tomorrow, Thursday 1 May 2014, will see the enforcement of Sharia law phase one, to be followed by the other phases.”

He doesn’t even have a fist-ful of beard. If he wants to follow a certain brand of ‘shariah’ then he should first implement it on himself.
Everybody is focused on Taliban when extremism has actually taken hold in Brunei.
Alhumdolilah. May ALLAH make it easier for him to implement sharia. He is implenting sharia in brunei, people there are happy with him and *yahan logon kay pait main takleef ho rahi hay.
It is not the shariah of Islam that he is imposing. But the shariah of a certain sect is being imposed on a population consisting of about 1/3 non-Muslims. How could they be happy with him?
While showing your love for that extremist shariah, there is no condemnation of system of monarchy, which he is continuing with, and which itself is an un-Islamic concept. Let me use an Arabic term, it might be more understandable: a la BID3H.
*i dont think so that it will implemnted on non muslims unless sharia requires it to be.
is there any difference of opinion in salaf regarding these? secondly you can only apply one interepretation of a law
*You also failto see that we are discussing sharia laws here, start another thread on monarchy and we can discuss there.
Certain parts of it will be implemented on non-Muslims for sure. Even many Muslims would not agree to various supposedly shariah laws. So how can he impose them on those Muslims?
The problem is interpretation, not the following of salaf. It is this interpretation which has caused several sects in Islam, with everyone pointing to the same salaf, Quran, and Hadith; but interpreting them as per their understanding. And then imposing THEIR understanding on others.
Monarchy and dictatorship is un-Islamic and bid3h. And I don’t need to argue about such fundamentally flawed concepts. It CAN’T be Islam. No argument needed. Just like lying and killing innocent people can’t be Islam without even arguing about it.
But religious people who lie and kill unabashedly, and call it shariah-compliant, can also declare monarchy Islamic.
I don’t understand it, what is going to be accomplished after passing such extreme laws? Brunei isn’t the only ones with such ambitions. Are they expecting the people of their country to wake up one day and decide “Well I don’t think I will be gay anymore, or else I’d get stoned to death!”.
This coming from someone who is willing to shoot and kill people if they break into her home. Kinda a double standard no? Death is okay if I do it. Not okay if someone does it for reasons I don’t agree with.
I was reading a detailed analysis and it is said that Sultan of Brunei is doing it because A LOT of stealing, looting, affairs etc are going on in the Kingdom itself. Especially fraud and looting. He wants to bring a stop to it and warn people not to do it.
Anyways, I dont know how to feel about this sharia law. Sounds a little extreme. I wish they would let Allah carry out these punishments instead.
Ones man life is as valuable as anothers. If you can take it you should be able to stand others taking anothers life based on their own personal view points.
shooting someone who is armed breaking in your home and is a possible threat is the same as stoning an innocent man for his sexual orientation. brilliant logic!:halo:
Its a belief system. You think its justified to kill someone for entering your property. Muslims consider it acceptable to kill someone for being homosexual.
In the case of the faith a gay man is not innocent.
