Brunch Ideas

Thinking of doing a birthday brunch for my daughters first birthday with about 25-30 people.

Here’s a list of things I have so far - im not sure if i’m making all of them, but just gathering different ideas:

yogurt parfaits
muffins
scones
macarons
donut holes
chocolate fruit cups
jalapeno bagels
croissant sandwiches
french toast casserole
nuts - almonds, walnuts, pecans
tea, water, orange juice, raspberry lemonade, coffee

what else do you guys suggest? and how many dishes do you think i should have?
thanks!

Re: Brunch Ideas

I would take out doughnut holes. Maybe you can add anyone of these: quiche, breakfast burritos, omelet, and hash browns.

Re: Brunch Ideas

Hmm. Yogurt parfaits cups contain fruit and nuts, right? That said…is it really necessary to also have chocolate fruit cups as well? Maybe just do one of those.

You have muffins, scones, bagels, and croissants. These are all “baked and bready” items. Maybe get rid of either the scones or the bagels. If you get rid of the bagels..it’ll save you from buying cream cheese. Hmm..bagels are a bit like the croissant sandwiches in the sense they both involve a spread/filling…so just one if them should suffice instead of having both. I also think you have more sweet items and you need to include savory dishes as lusi suggested above such as quiche, pasta salad, etc.

Re: Brunch Ideas

Actually you can add a hardy pasta dish, chicken fingers or chicken bake…

Re: Brunch Ideas

what about omlettes? or is that difficult to make on the day? I just think you have too many sweet things in there

ooo I know - hash browns! they’re easy. or potato rosti’s. you could make FKF’s pizza rolls ahead of time too, they’d be quite nice

Re: Brunch Ideas

pasta, mini pizza, mini burgers, french fries, pudding

Re: Brunch Ideas

some awesome suggestions! i felt like i had too many sweets too… but then i love sweets lol.
i’m also adding a hearty pasta dish as all of you suggested - beef lasagna (one of my favs).

Lusi - i havn’t made quiche before. do you have a good recipe for it?

Redvelvet - thanks for pointing that out! I didn’t even see it that way.

Nnabid - pizza rolls sound awesome! I haven’t made them before, but just looked up the recipe on FKF.

Brunch Ideas

Take out some of the baked sweet goods and add some more savory items lik hashbrowns/breakfast potatoes…and egg dish that can be made in the oven (quiche, frittata, Spanish tortilla), Chicken Bread from FKF would be a good addition too. You can also do little corny dog muffins for the kids..as always, Pinterest has some amazing ideas!

Re: Brunch Ideas

oh, also another question… i’ll have some family attending the brunch too.. is it possible to add desi dishes of some sort since im sure their preference is a desi brunch?

Brunch Ideas

Yes, you could easily add cholay/channay, some sort of papdi chaat or dahi barray, halwa poori and aloo ki bhujia

Re: Brunch Ideas

Well What i felt is its too much sweet menu. You can add desi dishes. As per my suggestion what about Haleem and Bihaari kabab??!! I think they would go great. Oh yes another thing can be Chicken roast which is also not much effort seeking too

Re: Brunch Ideas

thank you for the great suggestions!
how does this sound:
Quiche
Chocolate Fruit Cups
Scones
Macarons
Croissant Sandwiches or Jalapeno Bagels
Lasagna
Haleem
Bihari Kabab
Halwa Puri

Re: Brunch Ideas

 you’ll make that all alone ?

Re: Brunch Ideas

^^ I hope not! OP, I hope you are planning to buy some of the stuff or make stuff in advance.

Re: Brunch Ideas

I’m assuming you have cake as well to round out the birthday brunch? Also, you might want to add a make-ahead desi dessert (for the people who enjoy desi options) like kheer or barfi or something you can make well in advance and serve pretty easily.

Also, if you’re cooking yourself - don’t go overboard and make the menu so difficult for yourself that both cooking and serving it means that you don’t have the time or energy to enjoy your daughter’s birthday. People enjoy good food, they don’t need umpteen different items to enjoy good food and pleasant company.

Re: Brunch Ideas

thank you everyone!!
i was planning on making at least 4 of the items off the list.. the other stuff i can just order from the bakery
sehrysh - you are absolutely right! how did i forget the birthday cake! i know what you mean about not making too many dishes, but i try to accommodate everyone lol.. i have a picky group of friends/family!

this definitely helped!

Re: Brunch Ideas

Hmmm…

What if you were to scratch off the haleem and bihari kababs…and just have the lasagna and halwa puri n chanay as your meals; one being desi and the other non-desi and both are very filling. If you want to include meat, you can add it in the lasagna. Or if you feel that the desi meal should also include meat, then you can keep the kababs.

The quiche and lasagna are both baked and cheesy and rich dishes. What if you omit the quiche? And out of the croissants n bagels…omit the bagels as they are a more “common” item and the croissant sammies are more different and interesting and complex in both texture and taste. If the croissants are going to include egg like the quiche…but if you think it’s more time-consuming to assemble the croissant sammies…then omit them and stick to the quiche.

So then it would go like this:

Chocolate fruit cups
Scones
Macaroons
Cake
Croissant sammies
Salad
Lasagna
Halwa puri n chanay (with or without kababs)

Or…

Chocolate fruit cups
Scones
Macaroons
Cake
Quiche
Salad
Lasagna
Halwa puri (with or without kababs)

Either way you’ll have a fairly even/balanced number of sweet and savoury items…with a good variety of textures and mix of desi/non-desi flavors…without going overboard.

Brunch Ideas

Definitely include homemAde items . Desi ppl appreciate desi breakfast items. How about paya or Nihari? Cholay puri is great with fried flour tortillas.

Re: Brunch Ideas

redvelvet - wow, thank you so much!
thank you for your detailed response. option 1 it is

talked it over with the hubby and he wants the haleem back in! lol. we probably do need a desi main dish. my friends don’t mind if its american or desi. but family will always prefer desi

Re: Brunch Ideas

You can do Haleem before hand. I suggested that coz you were saying that elder ladies would like desi and Haleem in my opinion is best in the brunch menu. But if you get naan from shop the you can go with nihari or payee as they are super for brunch idea. What I was thinking (as per my family) that all stuff is usually a kind of dry stuff. My family is not fond of much shorba like stuff but they want to have 1 or 2 dishes with a nice gravy, even my friends. So Nihari or payee can do the needful. Are you going to get puris from shop? if not then it would be a tougher task to make at home as puris have to be presented warm. If you have some helping hands then the idea can be executed with home made pooris, however if you are goona get from shop or usinf frozen ones then its a different thing but in my opinion nihari naan/payee naan is better option, but as you wish
I can further suggest this
Chocolate fruit cups
Scones
Macaroons
Cake
Croissant sammies
Salad
Lasagna
Nihari/payee
Bihari kebab/Chicken roast
Naans
