british pakistani/american pakistani culture

Hey everyone

Does anyone have experience of being in or seeing marriages between british pakistanis and american pakistanis?

are there culture differences or are all western pakistanis pretty much the same?

Yes it is about the two individuals involved but im talking just in a general sense.

Thanks for your help.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

what about canadian pakistanis ??

to be honest inspiron ... its more about individuals than anything else. I have seen some really good muslim pakistani families here and some pakistani families that put shame to gores and I guess you can pretty much find the same in the british culture as well.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

thanks

im not really talking about 'good' or 'bad'

Im talking about actual culture.

For example in north american culture....people can sometimes wear jeans to work where as in british culture this is unheard of...obviously thats not going to cause a major clash..

Im just asking about peoples experiences having moved country due to marrying someone from a different country.

i hope im making sense

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

I think muzna and cheegum can shed more light on this as they both have brit spouses

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

Ummmmm.......why would there be a big difference?

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

I didn't find much of a culture difference......perhaps that's because we both come from working, middle-class families that have roots in the same place.

I guess the biggest difference is that we find more recent immigrants in North America while the community in UK has been established there for a longer time hence better integrated into mainstream life.

Other than that.....the differences were miniscule and largely individual to personality types and personal preferences.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

Americans have a difficult time adjusting to the separate hot and cold water taps (faucets) in the U.K. :p

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

^

really? how do you get “warm” water in UK directly from tap?

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

in some places, you simply don’t.

unless you do this:

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

:omg:

too many “logistical” problems I guess …

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

Yes, but they do have PG Tips, Minstrels, and maltesers. :jano:

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

:omg: Thats creative.

I really didn’t know there were separate cold and hot water faucets in UK… very interesting.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

I haven’t seen many…just in the older buildings and houses…many have been upgraded by now.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

So that automatically makes us more awesome, right? Oh and we have actually made the switch to mixed taps now :nahi:

On topic…I don’t think there’d be major differences in culture tbh.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

You know, you fancy Amerikans with your modern plumbing, haven't lived until you've experienced the refreshing feel of being alternately scalded and frozen. :P

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

Separate taps only really exist in older houses but they are not very common now as most people upgrade them.

inspiron - I dunno about the jeans thing. If you work in any more relaxed offices in the UK such as media or advertising, jeans are perfectly acceptable.

As others have said, it comes down to family and background.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

been married to a yankistani for over a decade, aside from some different preferences for certain food items its all cool
she cant stand weetabix and I am still not a peanut butter and jelly sandwich fan.
we still argue about the chips vs. crisps challenge

although I had been in US for sometime before getting married and had more of an american college experience than she ever did and was fairly throughly yankified so it is not comparable for someone moving right before or after getting married.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

How is British culture different from American culture?

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

One has tea with cookies....and the other has tea with biscuits.

Re: british pakistani/american pakistani culture

hmmmm so seems like there isnt much difference!

I think im asking because i have some family in texas who tell me that they wouldnt think i would ever be able to settle in amreeka as i am british....but i dont see why...so i was asking on here as there is a potential rishta from there.

ok i find it annoying to be told to 'have a nice day' 300 thousand times a day and i dont call my dad sir, but i dont see why (my cousins) they say that i would never be able to fit in :S

but i guess its just my cousins who hold that opinion so far!
