food fit for British and US soldiers not good enough for starving New Orleans…
UP IN FLAMES: Tons of British aid donated to help Hurricane Katrina victims to be BURNED by Americans
Mirror Newspaper, 19 September
From Ryan Parry, US Correspondent in New York
HUNDREDS of tons of British food aid shipped to America for starving Hurricane Katrina survivors is to be burned.
US red tape is stopping it from reaching hungry evacuees.
Instead tons of the badly needed Nato ration packs, the same as those eaten by British troops in Iraq, has been condemned as unfit for human consumption.
And unless the bureaucratic mess is cleared up soon it could be sent for incineration.
One British aid worker last night called the move “sickening senselessness” and said furious colleagues were “spitting blood”.
… The worker added: "There will be a cloud of smoke above Little Rock soon - of burned food, of anger and of shame that the world’s richest nation couldn’t organise a p**s up in a brewery and lets Americans starve while they arrogantly observe petty regulations.
"Everyone is revolted by the chaotic shambles the US is making of this crisis. Guys from Unicef are walking around spitting blood.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
You know, this whole article implies that kids are starving and people are in need.
The pictures shown are from the Superdome three or four days after the storm. Not only are those people no longer in the Superdome, they are no longer in the Astrodome, the second step of the evacuation.
So frankly the rations are not needed at this point. We do thank the Brits for their donation, and welcome their support. But this article is incendiary, and grossly overstates the human impact of the delay in supplies, and red tape. Why? Because there are some who revel in taking American down a notch, and who sell newspapers by breathlessly creating crises when there really are none.
The "Mirror" is hardly a bastion of responsible journalism.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
Think.
People are being fed. No problem.
These supplies arrived too late for the immediate emergency that was weeks ago. If we still did need the supplies, we would probably waive rules.
This is one more sensationalist article meant to imply Americans are idiots. The Brits suck this up, and buy newspapers. What the Brits fail to grasp is that the area demolished by the storm exceeds the square area of the whole frickin' island they are on. While we would love to be polite, and eat their rations, we do have other things to do. Thank you for your assistance, very thoughtful.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
No one is starving. They were starving 2 weeks ago, but not today. OG is right this article is sensationalist, meant to rile up you anti-American folks.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
What you all fail to realize is what has been accomplished. Frankly despite a slow start, things are going as well as can be expected. Now we are going to get kicked in the teeth again, and we will deal with that too.I just don't have the patience to tollerate the British tabloid press playing silly games. Near as I can tell, we saved the British Islands from sure destruction more than once. Just because you ship some tins of liver over here, do not think that you have repayed a debt...
Sit back and watch some good old fashioned American ingenuity, and tune down the breathless hysterical media a bit.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
OG british tabloid press is just as bad as the right wing US media. Lets ignore the rants of both. Daily Sun and Fox news are kinda the same level intellectually.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
If there was a report of cannibalism in Texas, it would be in World Affairs before the ink dried....
Don't you think the fate of that food has been discussed and well considered? Oddly enough, the following was the only comment from the FDA:
"The FDA said: "We did inspect some MREs (meals ready to eat) on September 13. They are the only MREs we looked at. There were 70 huge pallets of vegetarian MREs.
"They were from a foreign nation. We inspected them and then released them for distribution.""
Now, despite the wheezing of the British press, no official has said anything other than the MREs are fine and will be distributed. Don't you find that in direct contradiction to the main line of this story? More stupid anti-american propaganda.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
Read carefully. This is the precise language in the article:
"And unless the bureaucratic mess is cleared up soon it could be sent for incineration."
This is speculation on someones part, not fact. Note that there is not a single named source in the entire article. Just "unnamed workers". Fine bit of journalism when no one actuay has a name.
Re: British aid to Katrina victims to be burned by Americans
Ravage, precisely whom is alleging that this food is going to be burned. The reporter Ryan Perry is in New York. He certainly is not on site anywhere, he is just calling at random and collecting quotes from unnamed sources.
Here is a rule of thumb for Guppies. Any story about the Muslims world is a wild conspiracy theory, and can never be believed. Every negative story about the US is gospel truth no matter how dubious.
