I’m a Canadian citizen; if I find a job in the US (I’m a doctor) would it be possible to bring her to the US given I’m not a US citizen myself? If yes, how long would it take?
Re: Bringing wife to North America
I’m pretty sure you would have to become a permanent resident before you can sponsor anyone. I’m not a 100% sure though. It would be best to ask an immigration lawyer if that’s possible.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
basically i’ll be on H1 visa; is it possible to bring wife from Pakistan on H1 visa?
Re: Bringing wife to North America
there are spouse and dependent visas for the families of those on work visas. usually takes very little time to process, especially for canadian citizens.
if you are on H1B, wife would be on H4. it is a straight forward thing, get the lawyer who does your H1B to do the H4 too.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
Yes. it can take about 6 months or a year for her to get the visa as your dependent. also, she CANNOT work here legally if you have H1.
i know this because a good friend of mine is a doctor on H1 , it took him a year to bring his wife over here. and also, his wife cannot work until her husband can get a greencard.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
6 months to a year is still a pretty long wait :(.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
Call her in Canada on sponsor visaand take her to US
Re: Bringing wife to North America
only reason I’m thinking about going to US is because getting her to Canada takes really long time; visit visa not given easily by Canada
Re: Bringing wife to North America
And cant she come on spouse visa because you are canadian citizen yourself
Re: Bringing wife to North America
^ processing time is close to 3 yrs ![]()
Re: Bringing wife to North America
What is the processing time on average if you were a US citizen? Is that a different processing time if you were to become a resident?
Re: Bringing wife to North America
I better start looking this up too. Mamma jee find a girl for me.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
^You going bk to Pakistan for a girl as well?
Re: Bringing wife to North America
it takes at least a year for them to get the visa or maybe greencard. I hear it’s easier with a fiacee visa though, that’s why many people apply for fiancee visa. dont know much details, but out of all the relatives and friends I have, none of their spouse was able to come here for atleast a year, some even 2 years. so im guessing it takes upto a year to get visa to come here if your spouse is a citizen
Re: Bringing wife to North America
Seems like I’m not gonna find one here. Somehow I don’t get to interact with a lot of (any) desis over here. I’m not going to school, never get Fridays off, no wonder I don’t know a lot of desis here. My dad doesn’t know any desis here. I did not get to meet any of his desi friends the whole year I lived with him. Strange? My mom definitely doesn’t know anybody here, since she hasn’t been here in 20 years.
About going back, I don’t my mom’s going to find me somebody just yet. “Beta pehlay kisi kabil to ban jao” That’s not how things work here mom, this is the big bad United States. You’re gonna lose your son and then you’re gonna end up weeping..
I was just joking though. Too broke to bring anyone from Pakistan. Takes a lot of moolas. Moola I need to put me through grad school. Eyes on the prize.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
Besides, I was raised in Karachi so going back can’t really be held against me. I could just say, “I didn’t want someone who spoke Urdu with an accent.” Not that it really bothers me, but it’s just as a good an excuse as the not having an accent that’s American enough excuse.
Too broke though. Too frickin broke. Somehow my stupid brain doesn’t seem to care if I can’t afford being with somebody, which is bs.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
^Wasn’t holding it against you, was just wondering..
Re: Bringing wife to North America

Re: Bringing wife to North America
Not my thing. Engineering is all I care for, doesn’t matter if it makes me unpopular with the fairer sex.
Re: Bringing wife to North America
^^Go to the First Colony mall in Sugar Land in your free time. Lots and lots of desis there. ![]()
