Shopping in Toronto

Hi guys,

I will be getting married in October inshallah and I will be doing most of my shopping in Toronto. This forum was very helpful when it was time for my sister’s wedding last year. She opted to do her shopping from Pakistan but I thought the whole going and coming was quite hectic and time consuming so I am gonna try to get everything from Toronto.

Since I am not going to Pakistan, I have no idea what’s in style right now. I need help from anyone who knows what’s in style/fashion in terms of the length and style of kameez, length of shalwar and pants and the style of pants (narrow or flared). What colors are in for the rukhsati day: red, maroon or pink? For my walima, I have no choice but to wear white since that’s what my MIL picked.

I am trying to figure out how many formal clothes I should get and I’m gonna visit Dulhan in Richmond hill soon because I heard they also take custom orders and get it done in about a month. Does anyone have experience with them?

I’ve read previous posts about shopping in Toronto and they are very helpful. I would love to custom order clothes instead of picking them off the rack. I’ve heard about abida qureshi from this forum… does she do custom order? How do the custom orders turn out and how long does she take to complete them…since she’s home based I don’t know if she would be able to complete the order in time. Please share your experience since I am a bit worried about going to someone home based.

Has anyone else custom ordered their clothes from any shops? My friend’s mom ordered a lehnga from Dulhan and it turned out amazing although the fitting of the shirt was a bit odd but the lehnga came out exactly as ordered and was great…so that’s why I was planning to check them out.

I would appreciate everyone’s input for my planning and shopping. Thanks so much!

Re: Shopping in Toronto

There is Oriental Costumes and Jamayz and they're both in Mississauga. They both do custom orders. I haven't tried Oriental but I love the clothes at Jamayz. I am planning on getting a custom bridal outfit from Jamayz.

Re: Shopping in Toronto

Abida needs about 6 months to complete an order- thats how long she took with mine. it turned out beautifully except for a few things that, in hindsight, i should have been firmer about. the dupatta had a lot of kaam on it so it was ridiculously heavy, and she used dupatta fabric for the shirt which made the fitting go all wonky. the dupatta part i attribute to my inexperience, having never worn a bridal dupatta before, but the shirt part is all hers. she should have used common sense and used a heavier silk instead of a lighter fabric.
regardless, the kaam was amazingly done and the entire ensemble was beautiful and very reasonably priced, but just a caution.

there’s a lady in mississauga too, sara sheikh, who apparently has amazing stuff. haven’t seen it myself but a friend’s sis in law bought her outfit from there. Eastern Collections - Pakistan Bridal, Indian Bridal, Lehenga, Saree, Gharara, Salwar Kameez, Sherwanis - Eastern Collections

this is the outfit my friend’s sis in law wore- http://www.easterncollections.com/index.php?/Shop/1-Eastern-Collections/6-Lehenga/193-EL055-Womens-Lehenga-EL055/flypage.tpl.html
it was $900, i believe, and super sparkly and very pretty in person.

Re: Shopping in Toronto

The outfit from eastern collections looks really pretty and very reasonably priced. I wonder if they will be able to copy or customize some of their own designs...but definitely the price is a lot cheaper than dulhan coz my friends mom's lehnga costed about 1000 and it was a lot less heavy than bridal outfits

As for Abida qureshi...6 months is too long and i had a feeling that she may not be able to complete it that quickly so I guess I should shop around a little more before deciding
Thanks for the feedback and if anyone else has any experience to share please feel free to share :)

Also, as I was looking around I also noticed a lot of people advertising to ship clothes from pakistan...does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

Re: Shopping in Toronto

Does any one have Abida Qureshi's contact #??

Re: Shopping in Toronto

ok, i think i have the wrong number in my phone- it could be 905 472 0000 or 905 872 0000.

Re: Shopping in Toronto

I went to visit Dulhan in Richmond Hill and I had high expectations but unfortunately their style of embroidery is completely different from what I want. They probably need 3 months to do a custom order and she told me that the dresses on display are on clearance but the custom orders might even double in price. So that was not very hopeful.

I also visited Abida qureshi and she had some great stitched clothes and for now only 1 ghara in red. The prices were a bit high for a home-based designer but they are negotiable. To custom order I think she needs definitely 6 months or more if possible. I didn't like what she already had and I don't have 6 months to wait either. She also told me that even if we custom order something there's no garuntee that it would come out exactly as I want - so it's best to buy clothes that I can see in front of me.

My next step is to go to missisauga and try Eastern Collections and Jamayz.

Somegroovychick: Do you know how long Eastern Collections took to complete the order? Was your friends sis-in-law satisfied with their service? I haven't seen their work but their prices seem quite reasonable even without negotiating.

augustsunshine: Do you know anybody who ordered from Jamayz? Also, what is their price range for bridal?

At the end of the day I want a reasonably priced bridal outfit which has some resemblance to the type of work done in Pakistan. Indian bridal outfits look amazing on TV and magazines but upclose their work is completely different from what I'm used to.

Re: Shopping in Toronto

I know one should wear what suits you and don't care about fashion etc etc however, this is what's in
Long shirts
Capri pants (narrow pants that end below the kneee. how low depends on your own comfort level)
Naroow pants are still wearble but the slightly falred pants are more in.

Style of Kamiz is straight and long, shewani collars with gowns or font open style is still in. But i see the staright long shirts with capris being more the trend now. Besides bridal clothes, a combo of black white and red is quite in as well (for your jehez clothes)

Re: Shopping in Toronto

the outfit my friend's SIL picked out was a ready-made from the collection - she didn't custom order it.

Re: Shopping in Toronto

The phone number for Abida Qureshi is: 905-472-0000

Re: Shopping in Toronto

Whats the difference between capris and narrow pants? I think capris are the ones without any slit on it and narrow pants have a slit...tell me if I'm wrong :)
and of course, capris are shorter in length but I will keep them just above my ankles since my mom won't allow it to be shorter.....would that look bad?

Re: Shopping in Toronto

Capris are basically shorter in length. I call anything just above the ankles pants and usuually wear that sytle. It looks good. Wide pants if not too wide can actually be flattering (think boot cut jeans).

Bridal Lenhga's in Toronto

Hi everyone,

I've logged back onto gupshup after a long time. I need help. Are there any designers on gupshup from Toronto? I'm getting married in October and need a bridal lenhga. I've checked out many bridal stores in brampton and around the Gerrard st. area. But I didnt even like one lenhga! If you're a designer in Toronto or know someone or a store that has nice bridal lenhgas PLEASEEE let me know. I need to order my lenhga as soon as possible. I'm running out of time. I'm really counting on you guys for this one.

Thanks

Re: Bridal Lenhga's in Toronto

Have you tried Oriental Costumes or Amira's Fashions in Mississauga?
Both of these can replicate anything that you want and have it here in time for your wedding.
Do you have a pic of what you want done or are you looking for ideas still?

PM me if you want numbers or a direct reference. I know both shop owners personally.

Re: Bridal Lenhga's in Toronto

Oriental has some beautiful lenghas! I was flipping through a Pakistani newspaper the other day and saw a couple fo ads for Pakistani boutiques...cant remember their names now...but pick up some newspapers from a Pakistani store and check out what's there. There are a lot of ppl who sell stuff out of there homes as well.

Re: Bridal Lenhga’s in Toronto

Oriental Costumes is pretty good and they are really nice.
Indian Boutique Toronto - Pakistani Fashion Toronto - Custom Made Bridal Wear Mississauga - Bridal Sarees Brampton

There is also Eastern Collections
Eastern Collections - Pakistan Bridal, Indian Bridal, Lehenga, Saree, Gharara, Salwar Kameez, Sherwanis - Eastern Collections

Their websites suck but you can check out their contact info and go see their stuff in person.

Then there’s Jamayz but I’ve heard many people complain about the lady there. I bought my engagement outfit from there and she was really nice to me and my fiance, congratulating us but when I went back to check out her bridals, she was being rather snobby and refused to show me any of her bridals unless I was ‘sure’ I was going to go along with her! She also claimed that Bunto Kazmi and her are the only two people in all of Pakistan that do farshi ghararas…what a load of rubbish! Also, she said her bridals start from $1800 upto $6,000! Her kaam is good but she is a rip off and there is no way I was going to put up with her attitude.

Re: Bridal Lenhga's in Toronto

^lol
yes the lady at Jamayz is a bit crazy
she also refused to show me any of her samples and told me to come back if i am serious
well... i thought talking to her in person was me being serious enough considering i travelled 40 mins to get there
anyway
yes it sucks for her that she deals with potential clients that way and i got so turned off by her behaviour that i never went back

as for eastern collections... when i emailed her she quoted me really good prices in the range of 1000-1200
but when i met her in person all her prices were in the range of 2000-2500
AND since she's paki so i thought all of her work would be from there but actually she had a lot of indian stuff with shorter shirts which are not in i believe
her attitude was great, very friendly lady but she needs a lot of time for custom order, which i didnt have
plus i didnt like what she had in stock to even try to bargain (not sure why she increased the prices when i met her in person)

as for oriental costumes... i havent been there but heard its nice but expensive

funny incident in gerrard... i forget what the name of that shop was but it had two floors and there was an indian girl who was the sales associate
i asked her to show me the bridal collection as i was interested in getting something
she said "when you come with your parents...then i will show" (i was with my friend)
u cant even imagine my reaction
